Essex / Re: Does anyone know about "Priory House" and/or Nore Yacht Race?

Hi  Mick and Douglas,
I am certain we have pin-pointed the location of Minnie's 100th birthday Party with the Mayor.  Thank you both so much .  Her birthday was in July 1970 and this would tie in with the time of year the Race seems to be held. (Your mid-summer I guess)  I will now use google earth to take a satelite look at the area .  Thanks again. Sue

Hi lizdb,
This sounds hopeful.  I think Southend is ringing bells.  I will follow up. Thanks, Sue

Hi All,
As a chatter in Aust who is seeking to understand more about English ancestors, google earth has been fantastisic for me.  I have been able to pin- point the exact streets where they lived  and to kind of put them in a context of their geography (Changed of course since then, but still very relevant) You can kind of see how far the lads had to walk to school or their work and how distant one branch of the family lived from another.  I have been using it as an 'indespensable' for a few months. Essex / Does anyone know about "Priory House" and/or Nore Yacht Race?
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
When an ancestor turned 100 in 1970, an article and photo appeared in her local paper.  It showed her with the mayor and his wife.
I have only seen and do not possess this item.  Unfortunately, the name of the paper was not kept with the cutting and furthermore, as a distant colonial, I need to ask where it might have  been. I think Essex.
The text says that the birthday celebration took  place at  'Priory House'.  Perhaps this was a nursing home or hospital.
It also says that the guests were delayed by The Nore Yacht Race.
Any help appreciated.  Sue

Hi All,
Does everyone who is interested in Aust Burials have this address?  Some listed cemeteries offer online information, others have postal address for information.

http://www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries/

I am now confused as to whether I can place a request for a visit/picture/reading of headstone on this board or not.  I truly value the offers of English contacts on rootschat because for me everything is impossibly far away!!!
At the risk of upsetting the management, I will request here and if they want it eleswhere, I am sure they will say.  If I don't get much interest, I will do the unforgivable and post eleswhere on another board as well.

A man at Greenwich .gov.uk got this information for me about possible ancestors in WOOLWICH old Cemetery.

Benjamin John Parrett. Section L number272
H.V. Parrett (address19 Charles Street, Woolwich)
Olive Parrett Section D number 340 (address Hulk Alley Church Street, Woolwich.
As you see, there are no dates given, but if there was a headstone, it may reveal something.  Thanks in Hopes. Sue

Hi SellickAust,
Do you mean just on Foxtel?  I am in Melb. and I haven't noticed any progrm adverts etc.   We don't have Foxtel so I hope it is free to air.  I would very much like to see it as I have been hearing about it for months.

Hi Meliora,
Thank you for your efforts in my search.  I am most grateful.  As I  have no death date at all for her, it was a bit of a gamble. A 'wild card' as they say. One relative has it  that she lived to 103!  I will now think about how to search that out.
As a matter of interest, was the Davis family still at 32 Dagmar?  One of their daughters married my g. grandfather who was up the road at 42!!  She was his little girl's Sunday School teacher.  Sounds funny in this day and age.  Thanks again.  Sue

Hi Tricia,
I would love her to be the first.  Self and 4 servants -very nice.  but sadly, almost certainly not.

She was definitely born in Bermondsey and it was never got wrong over all the censuses.  However, having said that, I have learnt through this game that nothing should be discredited without careful thought.

Thank you for your help and searching.
