could / would an expert restorer please have a go at this photo?

Its my grandmothers uncle, who emigrated to the US as a young man.

Much appreciated.

Wales / Re: Anglicisation of Welsh place-names
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
I've come across a couple that made me smile, but the one that has still got me puzzled is: Chernys N....

My 4 x gm was apparently born there according to the 1851 (Yorkshire) census. In 1861 she gave her birthplace as Llanbadarn Fawr, which would make sense as her father was curate there at the time. But I still can't find any trace of her baptism, so I'm not sure.

But its when you get places like Dwygyfylchi, Llanrhaeadr and Llanfihangelyngnghornwy that the fun really starts. Most are then just given as "Wales".

The Lighter Side / Re: Tactfully giving advice to a "Researcher"

I wouldn't let it get to me. I've had this happen lots of times, and it used to annoy me, but now I just think to myself thats its not my problem if they are happy to live with rubbish.

I put my files together as I want to, and I like to make sure I can back up my information. Others are not so interested in being correct, or paying attention to detail. Let them get on with it, I say.

Warwickshire / Re: From Juce to Dewis

I used to work with a guy called John Dewis. He reckoned the surname originated in Cornwall. Maybe a Cornish language version of "Tew"

not having seen any of the adverts, me not living in the UK, I can't comment.

But:

.... the other problem cropping up on GR at the moment is people receiving emails addressed to their GR avatar which suggests that GR's security has been breached and names and addresses sold on.

Monica

I fully agree. I set up a second account for a branch I know connects to my tree, but for various reasons wanted to keep it separate. I also used a name on GR that is pretty much individual in the UK, but appears neither in the tree, nor in the email address that I also set up  exclusively and SOLELY for this one account in GR. For the last 3-4 months I have been received personalised email spam. The only possibilities are that the GR security has been compromised, or they have been selling the addresses. In either case, cause for concern.

I won't advocate what any one else should do, but I've made my decision.

I agree with Newfy, but the ending should be -coed, n'est-ce pas?

(as in wood)

Some of the spellings in that Genuki Gazeteer are decidedly suspect, lol!

A  ;)

Ta for that I think I'll take Uwchlawrcoed, as Uwchlawreoed makes no sense in Welsh.

much obliged.
