Yorkshire (West Riding) / Little London, Leeds
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me why this area is known as Little London?

Have done some research online but cannot find any answers. Reason I ask is that my London ancestors (leather dresser and family) suddenly moved from Bermondsey in mid 1850s to settle in Leeds and I wondered if this was part of a larger move of Londoners north - maybe prompted by lack of work in London and new opportunities in Leeds? Or maybe not.......

Would appreciate any insights!

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Buslingthorpe Lane, Leeds c 1860

Please could someone with local knowledge tell me which would be the "local" Anglican church for a family living in Buslingthorpe Lane, Leeds around 1860 onwards.

Thanks very much!

Warwickshire / Brinklow R.L. (or R.D?)
« on: Tuesday 24 July 07 16:52 BST (UK)  »
This is possibly a stupid question - but here goes

Have just received a death certificate (1896) and the place of death is given as Brinklow R. L. (the L could possibly also be a D)

Can anyone tell me what the RL/RD might stand for?

Thanks!

Shropshire / Burial in Kenley/Kenley Parish Register lookups
« on: Sunday 22 July 07 18:33 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone live in Kenley and could help me?

My ggggg (think that's right!) grandmother Milbrough (Milbroo/Milborough) Bennett was buried in Kenley on 26 Jan 1779. I'm not sure how feasible this is, but I would love to find out what is inscribed on her tombstone - if it still exists, is easily found  and is still legible of course.

Alternatively, does anyone know of a list of monumental inscriptions for Kenley parish church?

Additionally, I have a cd-rom of Kenley Parish registers from 1682 - 1812 and would be happy to do look-ups for anyone.

Family History Beginners Board / Death registered by the Coroner
« on: Sunday 22 July 07 18:07 BST (UK)  »
On my GGGgrandfather's death certificate from 1853, cause of death is given as  "Natural General Decay". However, despite the fact that his wife was still living, the "Informant" is given as the Coroner for Surrey and the date of registration of the death is exactly one month after the date of death.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be. Do you think there was an inquest and if so are there records of inquests held anywhere?  Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks

Armed Forces / Pensioner from 6th Regiment of Foot
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone help please?!!

After a long search I have found a possible GGGFather who died aged 73 in 1853. He is described on the Death Certificate as a "Pensioner from the 6th Regiment of Foot" and on the 1851 Census as a Chelsea Pensioner.

I am completely new to military records and have no idea where to go know to try and find out more about this man to see if I can confirm he is "mine"! Will there be any military records still exisiting/available that I could check? What sort of information would there be in any such records etc?

Can anyone suggest where to start!

Many thanks in advance!

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Where is Surbiton Common?
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Please can someone help.

In 1851 I have found my possible GGGFather living in Surbiton on/in Surbiton Common.

I had assumed this was a road in Surbiton but all trace of it seems to have disappeared from the modern map of Surbiton - as has any trace of the Common itself.

Does anyone know where Surbiton Common was?

Many thanks in advance!!

Armed Forces / Chelsea Pensioners - subseqeunt employment?
« on: Thursday 18 May 06 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with what is probably a very dumb question.

Is it possible that someone pensioned out of the army - at potentially a relatively young age ie @30 - would then be able to take up subsequent employment eg with Customs as a Locker?

I have "lost" my ggg grandfather in 1851 census. Easily found in 1841 where he is living with wife Maria and son James in Bermondsey. Occupation is given as Locker - which ties in with other information I have. I have also discovered that it is likely that he lived until at least 1853 and possibly 1860 - so should be somewhere in 1851!

I have found only one lead in 1851. A John Bennett with wife Maria (and also now daughter Ann and illegitimate son - which also fits with known facts) living in Kingston upon Thames in 1851. Ages are approximately right also. I don't know birthplace of John  or Maria yet so no confirmation here - but Ann is shown as being born in Middlesex - and that is correct.

However, John's occupation is given as Chelsea Pensioner. Could he now be a "double" pensioner - having been pensioned out of the army and then joining/being pensioned from the customs service. Or would any pension from the Army be based on a disability that would prevent him from doing any other (presumably physical?) work.

Does anyone have any thoughts - this is a completely new area for me - no military connections at all until - potentially - now!

Many thanks in advance

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Old Artillery Ground, Middlesex
« on: Wednesday 22 March 06 11:43 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where this was?  Was stated as the birthplace of one James Douglas Bennett in c1817 . If James Douglas is who I think he might be then I suspect that it is in East London somewhere (get a bit confused but I think this was once classified as Middlesex)

I know that there used to be an Artillery Ground in the Spitalfields area -  but does anyone know for sure?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give
