Australia / Arrival of Frank and Lucy EASTHOPE Vic late 1800s
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 05:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm searching for details for the arrival in Melbourne of Frank Wilmot Homer EASTHOPE and his wife Lucy.

The last record I have of them in the UK is the 1881 census, and then not again until Frank died in St Kilda in 1902.  They lived at 227 Dandenong Road, St Kilda at the time of his death.

Frank was born in SA in 1844. Lucy (Holder) was born in Cheltenham in 1849.

I've tried to find them in passenger lists without success.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to where I might be able to find them in passenger lists, or in directories that would indicate when they arrived.

Tks

Australia / Looking for details of Thomas EASTHOPE
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 07:40 BST (UK)  »
Trying to track down details for Thomas Wilmot Easthope:

B: July 1865, Lambeth Surry
Father:  Frank Wilmot Homer Easthope  Mother: Sarah Easthope (Becks)
Married Martha Ann Cushing Brodie 11 Dec 1894 Dum Dum, Bengal India (military marriage) so must have been serving in India.

I don't have anything concrete after that, although I'm pretty sure he's one of the Thomas Easthopes that appears in various electoral lists living in Lithgow NSW.  I can't figure out when he arrived.  He may have married again.

If anyone is researching this family an can offer some insight, it would be much appreciated.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Lock Road, Southwick?
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 08:02 BST (UK)  »
My relatives are shown in the 1881 and 1891 census living in Lock Road, Southwick.  I can't find it on Google, and was wondering if its still there.

Adjacent entries on the census are Albion Street and Butts Road, so I'm guessing it is/was near the old lock at the entrance to Shoreham Harbour.  They are later listed at Whiterock Road (Place ?) so they didn't move far.

My relative was a mariner working on a cargo brig sailing out of Shoreham, so I guess he needed to be close to work!

Any ideas of what the houses might have been like in Lock Road would also be much appreciated.

Hoping somebody with local knowledge may be able to help.

Cheers

England / Bankruptcy? Help pls with interpreting articles
« on: Monday 30 May 11 23:58 BST (UK)  »
I've found some articles in London Gazette about my ancestor, Thomas Wilmot Easthope.  It seems he was a bankrupt, but I'm having trouble interpreting what they mean.

I've attached a document that includes extracts from a variety of Gazettes that refer to Thomas, his wife Sarah and his son Frank.  I'd appreciate some help in interpreting what they mean.

- Was Thomas a bankrupt?
- Would he have needed to appear in person at court?
- Are his wife Sarah and son Frank tied up with his debts or do they have their own problems?
- Would Thomas have gone to debtors prison?

This is more mysterious because he is supposed to have been in South Australia at the time.  He arrived in Adelaide in 1839, married Sarah Elizabeth (Homer) in 1840 and had two children born in Adelaide in 1842 and 1844.

- Could Thomas have run away to avoid his debts?
- Could the court action have taken place while he was overseas?

I don't know exactly when he returned to England, but the family was living in Cheltenham at the time of the 1851 census.  Thomas died in 1862.

Any background info or suggestions very much appreciated.

Europe / British subject born in France 1822
« on: Tuesday 24 May 11 13:01 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Thomas Wilmot Easthope (b approx 1822) is shown in the 1851 census to have been born in Normandy France as a British subject.  In 1851 he was living in Cheltenham with his wife Eliza Homer.

I have no information about his parents, his early life, or how he happened to be born in France.

I'd appreciate any suggestions about how I can find some more information.

Lancashire / Willans in Lancs - help with ID people in photo
« on: Sunday 01 May 11 00:49 BST (UK)  »
I am related to Willans who lived in Westmorland/Lancashire/Yorkshire particularly around Tunstall, Leck, Sedbergh, Casterton.  They ran the Whoop Hall (aka Uphall) Inn in Burrow with Burrow for most of 19th century.

I'm looking for help with identifying the people in this photo. I don't have the original, so no way of dating, but a handwritten note on the back says "The Willan girls with their mother, sister of Margaret Bayley (nee Willan)... lived on a farm in the Lakes District which later became part of Lancashire"

Margaret Bayley had three sisters, but I think the most likely is Elizabeth Moore (b 1851) who married Robert Moore and lived in Marton, Lancs.  She had 2 daughters (Eleanor 1886 and Mary 1892) and 2 stepdaughters (Jane 1877 and Rebecca  1880)

I’ll really appreciate hearing from anyone who can help.

Nobody in my family knows the location where this photo was taken, or when it was taken.

I'd appreciate any suggestions to help date the photo from the dress etc, and to indicate the place it was taken, from the background, style of the cottage, etc.

Various parts of my family lived around Casterton/Kirkby-Lonsdale in Westmorland, and near Barton in Preston and Westby with Plumpton in Lancashire.

Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to offer about date and location.

Regards
