Remembering Britains worst rail crash in terms of loss of life

The Quintinshill rail disaster occurred on 22 May 1915 near Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire, Scotland at Quintinshill, an intermediate signal box with passing loops on each side on the Caledonian Railway Main Line linking Glasgow and Carlisle (now part of the West Coast Main Line).

The crash, which involved five trains, killed a probable 226 and injured 246 and remains the worst rail crash in the United Kingdom in terms of loss of life. Those killed were mainly Territorial soldiers from the 1/7th (Leith) Battalion, the Royal Scots heading for Gallipoli. The precise number of dead was never established with confidence as the roll list of the regiment was destroyed by the fire

There are memorial services at Quintinshill and at Edinburgh this week. Also there is a programme on BBC narrated by Neil Oliver on Thursday

The irony is that the whole world is aware of the Lockerbie Disaster which happened literally a few miles north of the train crash site yet the Quintinshill Disaster is relatively unknown ( Harrow train crash was the second worst rail crash)

Cumberland / Mystery Burial Ground in the Lake District
« on: Monday 12 January 15 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to identify this place. The picture was taken around 1970 and I know it was in the Lake District around  possibly the Windermere area. I visited it as a boy and I know it is the resting place of an ancestor (a Bell ) but which one? I seem to remember it was in a pretty remote place out of town but cant provide any details.

I appreciate it is a long shot that anyone would recognise.. but hey this board produces remarkable results.

Thanks in advance

Came across this card sent home by my dad while in theatre. Does anyone have examples of regimental cards? Was it centrally organised or down to the regiment?
