Peeblesshire / Re: Information on a birth record from Peebles.

Found refers to the record, not the child. If the child were a foundling, the parents would not be known or mentioned. In such a case the kirk session would sponsor the baptism.

Have you considered the possibility that there are two children here. The first John died and the name was given to a later sibling? That was very common.

You need to see the original records to be certain.

Haven't seen your other post, but it is not unusual for baptisms to be recorded later than they actually took place. As it was not compulsory, it was often neglected at the time. Sometimes, often when a later child was baptised, the earlier baptism was recorded with that of the younger sibling. In 1854 a huge number of earlier baptisms were recorded just before statutory registration was introduced.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Lobban, Aberdeen Shire

I had a look at the Family Search site to see if there is any sign of his birth, but it's not there. He may appear in the Episcopal records. I have several ancestors who appear in the Church of Scotland records for Longside at one time and in the Episcopal records at another.

Many lay people bought and read such books of a very religious nature at that period.

P.S. How do you know he was born in Longside?

He might have gone to work with/for a family member/friend who had already emigrated.

He might be seeking his fortune in the "New World".

He might have been involved in some way with the Jacobite rebellion and either "have" to leave or think it better to disappear. There were many Episcopalians in the Longside area and they, generally, were more sympathetic to the Jacobite cause. Worth checking the various books listing known participants in the rebellion.

Stirlingshire / Re: births inside the castle.

You could try first on Family Search, the free LDS site to see if they are there. If they are pre-1855 you may get a baptism entry in the parish register, if it survives. If the second birth was in 1855 you will find it on Scotland's People. If so you will be lucky as much more information was given on an 1855 certificate than on later ones.

Scotland / Re: Stillbirths in Scotland
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 17:08 BST (UK)  »
In Scotland stillbirths were not registered until 1939. Before that, if a child lived for a few seconds, it had a birth and death certificate. If it were stillborn there was no record.

After "Incumbent" it says "of S. Jude's". St Jude's English Episcopal Church is its proper name. It was in St Vincent Street, Glasgow, and from 1843 operated independently of the Scottish Episcopal Church. There were several "English Episcopal Churches" in Scotland at this period.

The Common Room / Re: Private baptism ceremony

In many parts of Scotland most marriages and baptisms took place in private homes until well into the twentieth century.
