Suffolk / Re: Looking for Walter J Bridgeman
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

If Walter's parents were Roger Bridgeman and Emily Churchyard then he is listed in the 1891 and 1901 census as living in Combs, Suffolk.

I have found the birth of Walter James Bridgeman registered in Stow Suffolk in the first quarter (Jan Feb Mar) of 1888.

There is an entry in the BMD for the death of a Walter Bridgeman b 19 Feb 1888, however the death was registered in 1971 in Swansea.
Perhaps he relocated there.

Apart from that I can't find anything that fits the dates.

The wreckhouse was where the "receiver of wreck" would operate. Anything found on the shore, salvaged or found at sea (boats, cargo etc) would have to be reported to the receiver of wrecks for him to decide the ownership of. Items were stored in the wreckhouse until a decision was made then sold off.

Thanks again

Thanks a lot for that. I gave the wrong date for Johns marriage, it was infact 1753. The children I have from that marriage are.

Elizabeth Martin 1756
James Martin 1757
Susannah Martin 1759
Hannah Martin 1760
Sarah Martin 1763
Rose Martin 1763
Judith Martin 1766
John Gibb Martin 1768
Samuel Martin (no birth date) married to Esther Orvis and Tamar Ann Simons

I have just sent off for 3 Cd's from ESFH, but any help in the meantime would be great.

Thanks again

In the 1851 census
William Pott (head) 22 born abt Yoxall bricklayer
Emma Pott (wife) 22 born abt 1829 Lichfield
William Pott (son) 2 born abt 1849 Yoxall
George Pott (son) 1month born abt 1851 Yoxall

That is the only William I can find for the dates given. I can find him living with his grandfather John but no mention of his mother being Hannah. I did find William and Emma in the 1881 and 1891 census, but no mention of their son William.

Regards

Kevin

Thankyou so much for that Trevor, I'm sorry that I have been a bit tardy with my reply but my computer has been down. I purchased a copy of the 1911 census and found them, infact Bill also had a twin brother who we knew about but not as a twin. Just a little discrepancy with Harold's wife, you mentioned it was Mary Angier, however I have her down as Mary Wellum, both Marys were on the same page in the BMD. I have backtracked from the details that were given in the census and they seem to coincide with the latter.
Anyway thanks again for that as we are now able to tally more people on the family tree.
The other part of my initial question was about John and Susan, we got a marriage entry for 1756 from the parish records but that is it. Would I be able to get a copy of the marriage certificate to try and trace their parents, if so would you have any suggestions as to how.
I will speak to my father about the wreckhouse and hopefully he will be able to enlighten both of us as to it's actual purpose and relevance in it's past.

Thanks again

Kevin

Firstly thanks for your reply.
I only knew them as Bill and Doris, and during all that time they lived in Spring Road, Brightlingsea. Bill used to work in the Wreck House in Sydney Street. I got the name William from the BMD index and am 100% certain that the marriage was registered in Tendring in 1936.
My grandfather Harold Karl Martin married Eileen Marie Day (1911-1964) and from what i can remember spent a lot of time with Bill who was definitely related to his wife (not her brother), but i am unsure how. My grandfather died in 1994 and attended both of their funerals. I know from my grandfather that they were both Brightlingsea born and bred, and i personally know that they both lived in Brightlingsea up to their deaths. I have since found out from my father that they had a son called Phillip but i have no idea of his where abouts or if he is still living, however he was born in Brightlingsea.

Thanks again

Thankyou for that, the other site i find interesting sometimes is www.gravestonephotos.com/public/area.php?area=essex

The other possibility is what Trevor has mentioned in a later post, they could have been Cremated at Weeley crematorium, so that is another line that i can try and follow.

Thanks

I am trying to find the parents of William Day. All I know is that he was born, married, lived, died and buried in Brightlingsea. He was married to Doris Evelyn Cole (b30 Jan 1910 B'sea, d1991 B'sea) in Brightlingsea in 1936. I have walked around All Saints churchyard but have yet to find their graves, so I am unable to determine which William he is from my list from the BMD index.
Also any information on John Martin who married Susan Gibbs abt1756 in Brightlingsea.
As I live in Lancashire now the only time I can put the footwork in or visit the Records Office is when I return to Brightlingsea to visit my father, so any help would be great and would mean I can continue my research in the meantime.
