London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Gerard Graham, Putney, 1873
« on: Saturday 27 July 19 20:07 BST (UK)  »
How very serendipitous and exciting !! Hello, GerryNew !! Have just been trying to decide in which of the three different threads I should post my reply  :D but have settled on this one.

Gerard Graham, Electrical Engineer, was my grandfather. I was intrigued to see that you include the "Gay" in his name - which was known to all our family - but that second name is not in any of the official records or letters/docs that our family has, so I would love to know how you knew about it ? Interestingly, his name was registered as "Peter" at birth, but changed to Gerard when he was christened. And, yes, he did work in India for about 4 years.

I too managed to trace his ancestors back to John Graham yeo of Wetheral, with the help of various wills etc, and a collection of documents and letters to my g/g/gf Revd John Graham, Vicar of Hinxton. I have a v.tentative idea of the ancestors a bit further back than JG yeo, but all unverified as yet, so not included in my family tree on Ancestry. But I feel sure that discovering more about the history of the Froddle Crook estate and the other properties in Cumberland would provide more clues.
I would be SO interested in seeing that 1810 letter from Rev Robert and John's letter of Admin and will !! Can't wait to see them !! or any of the Graham family documents that you have. I'll pm my email address to you.

South Africa / Re: Willem Johannes Basson b.c1844 - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 10 July 19 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Well, I've spent the past couple of days knee-deep in Bassons galore - getting sidetracked, of course, when I came across names from other branches in my FT  :) The various Nicolas Joh.Salomons and Willems took a bit of untangling, but I think "my" Basson branch is correct back to the SV/PROG now - and Johanna Visser's branch was relatively easy (thanks to the Cape Orphan Chamber inventories). So time for my next brickwall ...................
Thanks once again from your help and lateral thinking, TreeSpirit and gmauchan - and hooray for RootsChat !!

Oh, that is just wonderful, TreeSpirit !! you are absolutely marvellous - Thank you !!!
I will be champing at the bit all w/end as I can't take my laptop with me - nor enjoy perusing those documents until I get back  :'(  ...... but am looking forward to Monday :)

No, haven't found his 1st marriage yet, gmauchan. Am still sifting through all the Basson info I've accumulated so far, in the hopes of some more clues - will be back searching after the w/end.

Yes, I saw that DN and also thought it was a real possibility. 4 marriages !!?? what a guy  ::)
Thanks for the link to that marriage record - can you read what it says in the right hand column ?
Am getting quite mind-boggled with all the DNs and notes that I've made, and trying to disentangle the various Willems - might make a separate FT just for Bassons. Bloeming genealogy, it's so-o-o addictive !! :D
