Norfolk / Searching for Marriage Record of John Northover READ
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 03:08 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for a John Northover READ (quite a few of them around) born c1846 Portland Dorset, who has disappeared after the 1881 census when he was living with his parents at the Chesil New Hotel Portland Dorset age 30. Occ. Baker. On the 1871 census age was given as 24.
On the 1911 census a John Northover READ, born Portland Dorset, age 69 is living at 47 Grimsby St Norwich. Occ. Dealer in Work of Art. Married to Elizabeth also 69 for 15 years.  Giving a birth year c1842 and marriage year about 1896.
So far have not found them on the 1901 census or anything about Elizabeth before this marriage.
There is a marriage on Family Search for Elizabeth HALSE and John READ at Norwich St Helen, Norfolk England.
FHL Film Number: 1565303 and also another with a Record Number of 23145 which shows
John Read Principal England, Norfolk, Parish Registers (County Record office), 1510-1997
residence: October 0009 St Helen  Spouse: Elizabeth Halse
marriage:  October 0009 Norwich St Helen, Norfolk England
Can anyone explain what October 0009 means??
I haven’t been able to find this marriage on FreeBMD or A’try so cannot order the Certificate to see if this is the correct John Northover READ.
Any help to track down this marriage record to help prove or not that this is the elusive John would be much appreciated.
Will also post a query on the Dorset board to ask for assistance and cross link the posts when done.
Thank you
HeatherR

The Napier War Memorial & Conference Centre was refurbished a few years ago and the Eternal Flame and the Rolls of Honour were put into "Safe Council Storage" from which they have as yet not returned. There has been a lot of uproar about them not being returned and as far as I can remember they have still not been replaced.  The building was also renamed the "Napier Conference Centre" but due to public disapproval "War Memorial" has since been added. You may be able to Google the ongoing story or else the Napier City Council website I think has a Contact Us facility. New plans have been drawn up, with the help of the original architect, to replace them. The Napier RSA may also be able to help you or they may have a photo of them as they were or may know where one can be found.
There is a Hawke's Bay Knowledge Bank that have a big collection of old H.B. photos so maybe check their website as well.
Don't often get into that part of town but would be happy to photo them for you when/if they are replaced.
Twiggy's link described it as one of the Best Kept Memorials, a lot of Napier residents would like to see it returned to that state.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Putting a Gravestone Back Up
« on: Wednesday 07 April 21 08:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello Ayashi,
I don't know if this will be any help to you, but in 2014 I had a headstone repaired in Cambusnethan Cemetery in Scotland. I live in New Zealand and, as you can see, had a lot of help and advice as to how to go about it. The before picture is taken after the stones were dug out, they were standing,  but both buried as deep as Dear Mother and New Zealand.
Can't be too sure of the cost but think it was in the region of about £2,000, but prices are sure to have risen since then.   Here is the link to the thread.

Best of luck with the restoration.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Missing birth of Joseph TATTERSALL
« on: Tuesday 30 March 21 07:27 BST (UK)  »
Thank you all for your help.
Have had a look at "Papers Past" and Lawrence TATTERSALL had his home in Vincent St Auckland for sale from the end of 1863 and the ad was still running in 1865, (a bit different from today's housing market  :))  so it seems that the family was still in NZ 1862-1866 and had not popped over to Australia as I thought maybe happened.
The other option is maybe a mistranscribed surname, have tried a few but nothing so far. Family Search sometimes pops up with the answer but not so far.

Hello Debra,
Thanks for your reply. I haven't splashed out on his marriage record as yet.  I don't know if there are any other children born in those years. Have only started researching this branch.
On the Waikaraka Cemetery Record for Joseph Cochrane's Burial he is listed as born in NZ and one of his daughters, Ada, is buried there as well and she is listed as being born in Australia c1887. Another daughter Mary c1888 and son Jos Konlson Laurence ( Joseph Knowlson Lawrence) c1890-1891 were also born in Victoria. But have found no other Australia records so far.
Joseph's son Raymond Nelson c1897 in NZ gives his Father's Birth Country as NZ on his WW11 Military Attestation Form.
So back to the hunt.
Cheers

New Zealand Completed Requests / Missing birth of Joseph TATTERSALL
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 22:29 BST (UK)  »
I have had no success finding the birth of Joseph Cochrane TATTERSALL. F. Lawrence (Laurence on some of the births) M. Sarah Hannah nee COCHRANE
He died 29 Jun 1953 aged 89. From an on line tree birth given as 12 Aug 1863.
There is a gap in the family NZ Birth registrations between1862-1866 and thought maybe they went to Australia so have tried some Australian records with nothing found.
Thank you

Hello kentishkiwi,
I was also looking for a Coroner's Inquest Report and thanks to your post and a wee bit of time have managed to find the one on my man.  It mentions he was in Gisborne Gaol so will now go to the Police Gazettes and try to find him there.
Thank you for your very useful link.
Cheers
