Occupation Interests / Harrison's Spinal Institute, Edgeware Road London
« on: Friday 27 June 08 21:30 BST (UK)  »
I have just found my husband's 4xgreat grandfather living next door tot eh above institution in 1871 and am totally fascinated to what exactly it was!

I have tried google on only got one hit to a book in which it makes a surgeon now working at said Institute.

Does anyone know anything about it? What would have gone on here?

The coincides in this page of the census are amazing - the 4x great grandfather has the same profession as my husband and I work with people with spinal injuries!! Spooky!

Family History Beginners Board / Where would death be registered?
« on: Sunday 01 June 08 21:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track one of my husband's ancestors deaths. She lived in Edinburgh but we believe she died in a car accident in the 1930's somewhere in England.

Would her death be registered in the district it occurred or at home?

Thanks

« on: Tuesday 27 May 08 15:46 BST (UK)  »
I have been told that my husband's great grand uncle's obituary was in the Times on 7th May 1965.

I would be delighted to receive a transcription or even more so told where I could access the image online.

His name was Thomas Hunter.

Many thanks

England / How are they related??
« on: Friday 23 May 08 16:15 BST (UK)  »
I'm confused and hope fellow rootschatters can help?

In 1891 my great grandfather (John Clegg) is listed as nephew in the household of James Elsworth in Todmorden (RG 12/3546 pg 22).

In 1901 by great grandmother (Frances Dorricott) is listed as niece in the same household (a pub in Todmorden) at RG 13/4085 pg29

My great grandfather was in Blackpool on the 1901 census and they subsequently married in Blackpool in 1901.

What I am struggling with is to work out if they were actually related to each other prior to marriage? Also to work out how they were niece and nephew to James Elsworth.

I've tried to work out James family tree and that of his wife Betsy (nee Hudson) but have been stumped!

I can find one brother only for Betsy - William - his children would have been Hudson's not Clegg or Dorricott.

James Elsworth also appear to have just one brother George, so again his children would not be Clegg's or Dorricott's.

All suggestions greatfully received!

Family History Beginners Board / Difference between christening & baptism?
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I must admit to never really having understood the difference between a baptism and a christening but now I am more confused then ever!

The reason for the extra confusion is that I have just looked up an ancestors baptism in Cheshire (on the new LDS website) and the image says..............

"Christened 15th December. Baptised privately 2nd Nov"

This seems to suggest the child was baptised and then christened - why?

Midlothian / Did Great Aunt Julia die?
« on: Wednesday 09 January 08 12:54 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hunting for the death cert of my husbands great great Aunt Julia but have failed to find any possibilities on Scotlands people.

I'm wondering if anyone else can spot her?

She was born Julia Coleman Haig in August 1880. She married James Stewart in 1907 and lived at Abbey Mount in Edinburgh. Julia and James ran the Stewart Dance academy (which became the Astoria - thanks to fellow RC for that info!)

The family story goes that she was killed in a car accident in ?1930's.

I have hunted in her married and maiden names for deaths from 1907 to 1955 but can't see anything which ties into her and no cedits left.

If anyone can spot her I'll get more credits for the certificate unless a very kind person is visiting the GRO and would be willing to look up and transcribe the death certificate?

Thanks for all help

Lancashire / Black Sheep in Wigan?
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
I've decided that 2008 will be the year I break down the brickwall relating to my great great grandfather and why he was in prison in 1901.

I've posted on Rootschat in the past and not even managed to chip a brick out of the wall (very unusual for RC!!)

So my theory is that as in 1891 he was living in Hindley Wigan but by 1901 was in prison in Dorset (his son was still in Wigan) I need to trawl the newspapers in Wigan from 1891 onwards???

Does anyone know if any of these are available online? Does the Wigan History Shop have newspapers from this period?

I've never hunted newspapers in this way - how easy is it/any tips?

Thanks

Down / Wedding in Maghera 26 March 1861
« on: Friday 28 December 07 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
From a Scottish birth certificate I know the parents wedding occurred on the above date.

I'm totally new to search in Ireland and wonder if their is any way I can find more info - ideally parents - over the internet?

The couple were John Stewart (Wine merchant) and Caroline Eleanor Newsome?

Thanks

Midlothian / Help reading certificate please
« on: Friday 28 December 07 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me piece together what this certificate says/means?

I have tried to reduce it to just the person I am interested in but have failed so here it is in parts -

In part 1 - I think I read John Bowles Ran??? Stewart. 1873 October 1st 6.15am. on board  [something, something] steamer "Racoon" lying at Steamboat Quay Greenock.

Part 2 - John Stewart Spirit Merchant Domicil 19 _ _ _ Edinburgh. Caroline Eleanor Stewart m.s. Newsome?
1861 March 26th Mag??? County of ?? Ireland.

Then the bit I'm not as desparate for I believe reads - signed John McBryne Clerk for "Racoon" Belfast Steam Cop 15 Wellington St Greenock

Part 3 - 1873 October 4th at Greenock. Signed Robert Campbell Registrar. October 8th ? at Edinburgh ? Assistant registrar
What does it say up the side?

The registration is from the district of St Andrew, Edinburgh

I'm really struggling with this to get the exact detail   :( :( :D  but gather John was born on the Racoon in the quay at Greenock.

Any help gratefully received! :) :)
