The Common Room / James Lowe - lost in 1851, England or Scotland?
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 19:18 BST (UK)  »
This chap has got me baffled in 1851 when I can't find him anywhere!

He is quite an interesting character and I have managed to find out quite a lot about his life and have marriage and death certificates, PO Book records, probate records and even a copy of his health records prior to his death in 1881.

BUT where is he in 1851?? (And 1841 to come to think of it!!)

This is what I know

Born James Lowe, c1828/9 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England. (Not been able to search PR's as I am in Lancashire)
Parents John Lowe and Martha Rowland from marriage certificate
1859 in Glasgow. Listed in the PO Book at 17 Howard Street, Glasgow & 150 Trongate, Glasgow as Surgeon & proprietor of Glasgow anatomical Museum
24 Dec 1860 Marriage to Mary Mellor at 17 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow. Mary was 12 years younger than James and his cousin.
1861 census living at 105 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Listed as a Chemist
1871 Census living at 112 Bloomsbury, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, Lancashire. Listed as a Dentist
1881 Census living at 1 Russell Square, St George Bloomsbury, London, England. Listed as Gentleman.
22 Aug 1881 Dies in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Temperance Hotel, Leeds 1911
« on: Tuesday 27 December 11 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
Just found one of hubbie's ancestors as manager & proprietor of a Temperance Hotel in Leeds in 1911. (Frederick Charles Haswell, along with his wife and kids who are working as waitresses)

I'm really wondering if anyone can name or has any info on the said Hotel? The address they are at is 3 George & Dragon Yard, which I can't find on a map but believe may have become Burton Arcade. They are next door to the White Bear Inn which is at no 2.

Any pointers gratefully received!

Lancashire / Bloomsbury House, Rusholme Road, Manchester
« on: Monday 04 April 11 22:05 BST (UK)  »
The above is listed as the usual address of an ancestor on his probate record in 1886.

Although I don't live that far from Manchester, my knowledge of it is not good!

Would Rusholme road now be known as Wilmslow Road? Can anyone trace Bloomsbury House? Is it still standing?

The Common Room / Times Archive 1988
« on: Monday 28 March 11 18:18 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the Times Archive for 11th August 1988? I'd love to read a family obituary that I have just found but my library access only runs to 1985!

Midlothian / Edinburgh Unionist Club/5 Duncan Street
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what was at 5 Duncan Street in 1909 when one of OH's ancestors married there. His address at the time was in Leith.

I have been able to find "became a girls' day school from 1855 to 1891 and was later to serve as a dancing academy and then as a masonic lodge". we do have a history of having dance academies in the family (Stewarts Ballroom) but I wonder if it was a Masonic Lodge in 1909?

Does anyone know?

Lancashire / Darwen - Learning Disability Home 1941?
« on: Saturday 12 March 11 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
I believe it is possible that my father's aunt may have died aged 17 in Darwen in 1941 - possibly in an institution for people with Learning Disabilities (maybe Downs?)

Does anyone know of such an institution that would have accepted people from quite some distance away (e.g. Barrow-in-Furness)?

Many thanks

Lancashire / Death Barrow 1941
« on: Saturday 12 March 11 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
I've just had the pleasure of finding my great grandparents grave in Barrow Cemetery. The staff were extremely helpful and gave me a print out of the register for the grave which showed not only my great grandparents but also two of their children who died aged 17 and 21.

I am struggling to find the death registration for the daughter - Winifred Baines Smith who was buried on 27th August 1941 aged 17 years. I presumed she died in August 1941 but can't find a registration for the event.

I have discounted a registration in Darwen in Sept 1941, although the age is correct, the registration would have taken place after the burial and I  don't think this was possible. Also discounted the death in Dec 1942 due to date and age 33, although is in Barrow.

Can anyone spot the registration as I would really like to order the certificate!

Peeblesshire / Is she in Innerleithen Cemetery?
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find the last resting place fror my husband's great aunt for quite some time and yesterday I suddenly realised that I might have actually taken a photo of it! Yesterday, I noticed on the photo that there appears to be a cremation pot at the foot of the headstone and I am now wondering if that is my lady - Julia Coleman Haig Stewart.

I am wondering if anyone can visit Innerleithen Cemetery on  Traquair Road and check for me (I am in Lancashire!) or if anyone has access to transcribed MI's?

In the cemetery the gravestone for Julia's parents - Adam Alexander Haig and Julia Coleman Aaronson is easy to find - from entrance follow path towards the back and the headstone is about 1/4 of the way back but close to the path from what I remember.
I can email a photo of the gravestone to help anyone who may be able to visit the cemetery.

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give as I'm not sure when I would be able to get to Scotland again and this lady has caused all sorts of problems tracking her down! (see my previous posts on here about her!)

Many thanks
