This chap has got me baffled in 1851 when I can't find him anywhere!

He is quite an interesting character and I have managed to find out quite a lot about his life and have marriage and death certificates, PO Book records, probate records and even a copy of his health records prior to his death in 1881.

BUT where is he in 1851?? (And 1841 to come to think of it!!)

This is what I know

Born James Lowe, c1828/9 in Walsall, Staffordshire, England. (Not been able to search PR's as I am in Lancashire)
Parents John Lowe and Martha Rowland from marriage certificate
1859 in Glasgow. Listed in the PO Book at 17 Howard Street, Glasgow & 150 Trongate, Glasgow as Surgeon & proprietor of Glasgow anatomical Museum
24 Dec 1860 Marriage to Mary Mellor at 17 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow. Mary was 12 years younger than James and his cousin.
1861 census living at 105 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Listed as a Chemist
1871 Census living at 112 Bloomsbury, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, Lancashire. Listed as a Dentist
1881 Census living at 1 Russell Square, St George Bloomsbury, London, England. Listed as Gentleman.
22 Aug 1881 Dies in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received!

The above is listed as the usual address of an ancestor on his probate record in 1886.

Although I don't live that far from Manchester, my knowledge of it is not good!

Would Rusholme road now be known as Wilmslow Road? Can anyone trace Bloomsbury House? Is it still standing?

I'm trying to find out what was at 5 Duncan Street in 1909 when one of OH's ancestors married there. His address at the time was in Leith.

I have been able to find "became a girls' day school from 1855 to 1891 and was later to serve as a dancing academy and then as a masonic lodge". we do have a history of having dance academies in the family (Stewarts Ballroom) but I wonder if it was a Masonic Lodge in 1909?

Does anyone know?

I've just had the pleasure of finding my great grandparents grave in Barrow Cemetery. The staff were extremely helpful and gave me a print out of the register for the grave which showed not only my great grandparents but also two of their children who died aged 17 and 21.

I am struggling to find the death registration for the daughter - Winifred Baines Smith who was buried on 27th August 1941 aged 17 years. I presumed she died in August 1941 but can't find a registration for the event.

I have discounted a registration in Darwen in Sept 1941, although the age is correct, the registration would have taken place after the burial and I  don't think this was possible. Also discounted the death in Dec 1942 due to date and age 33, although is in Barrow.

Can anyone spot the registration as I would really like to order the certificate!

Looking at ancestors on 1901 census on A*******y and an 18 yr old male has the above has is occupation.

It's obviously a mistranscription but I can't work out what it should be! Can anyone work it out?
