Does anyone know what this job would have entailed in 1901?

Was it a well paid job?

My Great grandfather is living in a 4 room home in 1901 with this as his occupation.

On the same street are Dressmaker , building contracter , cabinet maker , coachman , drapier , teacher.

I am wondering if he was quite well off ?

Any help greatly appriciated
Cheers!
