Down / Edward Johnston, Margaret Muir, marriage July 26, 1823
« on: Sunday 24 December 23 01:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a Thomas J. Johnston, reportedly born 1818 in Killinchy, Co. Down , who is reportedly a son to Edward Johnston and Margaret Muir. I don't think this is true.
Anyway, Edward Johnston and Margaret Muir were reportedly married July 26, 1823 in Borgue. Can anyone tell me where this is and/or find the marriage record? They had a son William abt 1829, John abt 1831, daughter Marthew abt 1833 and James abt 1834. They moved to Scotland before 1851 where they can be found under Jonston.

Thomas J. Johnston was born abt 1818 in Ireland, emigrated to USA, married Isabella Arter/Arlen/Carter from Pennsylvania, abt 1857 and died Dec 28, 1901 in Danforth, Illinois. Does anyone have further info on Thomas such as death certificate naming his parents, or an obit? He is on findagrave but parents are not listed. I have not found his marriage certificate either which might name his parents. First son Edward if that means anything.
Thanks for any help

Derry (Londonderry) / John Johnston and Ann Greer, married Oct 17, 1856 Woods
« on: Monday 27 November 23 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
I really need some help with this family, as there is a big puzzle. John Johnston and Ann Greer were married Oct 17, 1856 at Woods Chapel, his father William (I believe his parents to be William Johnston and Nancy McMaster).
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sta/
John is a weaver from Drumenagh. They are on the 1901 census, in Ballyronan More, and John is age 64, a laborer who can read and Ann is 62. They have unmarried children John, Matthew, Robert and Sarah.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01stb/
I don't find the family in 1911 but I do find a john Johnston, widower, age 73, farm laborer, living with son Matthew in Ballyronan More and Matthew is married (but I don't think so). John can read.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01stc/
Now we come to my problem. There are many online trees that say Ann died Jan 20, 1904 in Drumenagh. But this death record says her husband was a stone mason. So thinking this is not correct, although I can't find another death record for her. Furthermore the trees say that John remarried in Aug 1904 to Matilda McCready nee Nelson.  John is a widower, farmer,  from Tamlaghduff with father William. Feasible. Matilda has father Samuel.
However, when I find who I think is John and Matilda in 1911, in Tamlaghtduff, John is a farmer who cannot read. Age 80. Matilda age 68.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01ste/
Then I went back to 1901, and  I did find a John Johnston, widower, in Tamlaghtduff, cannot read, living with a daughter Margaret Johnston, not married (Look closely to see the word NOT in the previous column),  and a granddaughter Maggie Bradley, also not married, but born in Scotland. I think this would be the John Johnston who married Matilda Nelson in 1904, though I can't find Maggie's birth in either Ireland or Scotland. Ann Greer and John Johnston did have a daughter Margaret in 1867 and I don't know if she ever married.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01stf/
I think online trees have confused these two families. Then a John from Tamlaght, laborer, widower, died in 1918 in a workhouse in Magherafelt, age 89. Age agrees with 1911 census of Tamlaghtduff so I think this was the husband of Matilda.
I did find the death of a Matilda Johnston in 1916, age 79, in Drummuck, wife of John Johnston, laborer, daughter Bridget Magill present.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01sth/
I did find Patrick McGill, wife Bridget in 1911 in Tamlaghtduff. She is age 40.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Bellaghy/Tamlaghtduff/607871/
Then I found the marriage of Bridget and Patrick McGill in 1902. She is McCready, father John. This is all adding up that we have found the correct Matilda's death in 1916.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01stj/
then I found the marriage of Matilda Nelson/Neilson to John McCready in 1865. Her father Samuel Nelson, same as when she married John Johnston.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01stk/
But the problem remains. I think these are two different John Johnstons. Can anyone help with this? Can anyone find the death of Ann Johnston nee Greer 1901-1911 and the death of her husband John probably in Ballyronan More after 1911? Maybe they emigrated. Or went to Scotland or  England.
I really need help.
thank you
Peggy

Canada / James Lennox, Elizabeth Barrager/Berager
« on: Monday 02 October 23 05:38 BST (UK)  »
I have a brickwall with James Lennox married to Elizabeth Barrager. James was reportedly born abt 1790 in Ireland, emigrated to Canada where he married Elizabeth Barrager abt 1822. She had been born to Walter Barrager and Margaret Fiero in Schoharie, New York before moving to Winchester, Dundas Co., Ontario. I can't find their marriage and I can't find their deaths. Elizabeth died 1860 as per findagrave and James died unknown in South Mountain, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties, Ontario, Canada, but some online trees say he died 1882. I am particularly interested in finding the parents of James Lennox. His memorial id on findagrave is 249969695
I don't think the names of the children on the 1830 census as per findagrave are correct. The children listed on the drop down are likely correct which include Charlotte, William M., Oliver and James C.
I have searched extensively for records on this family. There are many trees that say the parents of James are John Lennox and Mary Bowie Hinds but I don't think so. Their son John, his brother William and his sister Elizabeth all went to Innisfil, Simcoe Co., not Dundas Co. John Lennox and Mary Bowie Hinds did have a son James but it is believed that he stayed in Ireland and he did die in 1882 in Killygullib.
If anyone can find the marriage of James and Elizabeth, or the death of either, or even a census with the family on, or an obit for either, that would be fantastic. Thanks for any help.

Canada / Hartford Lennox, 1853 marriage, Ann Jane Fullerton
« on: Monday 04 September 23 23:34 BST (UK)  »
According to findagrave, Ann Jane Fullerton was married to Hartford Lennox in 1853, think Toronto, Ontario. They had daughters Esther Amelia 1855 and Hartford Ann 1856 before Hartford died in 1857. I have looked on familysearch and ancestry and cannot find either his marriage or his death. looking for his parents names. Hartford is an unusual name. I do have a Hartford Lennox baptism in Ireland Sept 29, 1826 and wondering if it is possibly the same person. Age is in range.
thanks for any help

John Lennox was born Jan 22, 1795 in Kilrea, Ireland to John Lennox and Mary Hinds. He married Margaret Humphrie Galloway abt 1820 in Ireland and they emigrated to Innisfil Township, Simcoe Co., Ontario abt 1826. As per findagrave, he died Dec 16, 1866. Would there be a death certificate to confirm his parentage or an obit to confirm his children. I am particularly looking for an Elizabeth Lennox who married James Rogers Booth in 1856 in Trinity Church, Toronto. She should be on the 1851 census but I can't find the family in 1851. Elizabeth should have a brother Ignatius Galloway Lennox born 1827. Thanks for any help.

United States of America / David Crossett, died 1874, Saline, Missouri, USA
« on: Sunday 02 July 23 19:52 BST (UK)  »
David Weston Crossett was born Dec 12, 1845 in Killymuck, Ballinderry Parish, Ireland and baptised Jan 19, 1846. His parents were John and Mary.
David is found on the 1870 cenus in Philadelphia and Jane McFarland is in the same household so this would be before they married.

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sg2/
In 1873, they had a son baptised David Washington Crossett, although his death certificate says David Weston Crossett.
Then David Sr. reportedly died in 1874 in Saline, Missouri. I don't know what took him there. Jane stayed in Philadelphia where she died Dec 5, 1920 and her funeral was at the home of her son David. I can't find a death record for David in 1874. He is not on findagrave.  Would there be a newspaper article about his death, possibly an accident since he was only 29.  Many trees have his birth as 1839 but that is not so. Thanks for any help. Looking for his mother's name which I am hoping might be on his death certificate.

I have found two articles about the murder of Thomas Crossett on June 18, 1886. These articles say that Thomas had a wife, who was Theresa Walsh, whom he married Nov 16, 1878 after his first wife Ella Louise Walsh, Theresa's sister, had died in 1874. A man called Isaac Bradley was firstly arrested and released, but later a William W. Clark was arrested for the murder.
There is a date of death on findagrave which includes Thomas' date of birth. However, what I am looking for is either a death certificate verifying his parents' names, and/or an obituary naming his siblings. Thomas did have brothers Samuel and James who are named in their father John's will written in 1876, and John died Feb 3, 1878 in Ballymoghan,Co. Derry, Ireland.  I think  this is the correct son Thomas who died as stated on June 18, 1886 and the correct son Samuel who died Jan 12, 1894,  also in Calaveras Co., California following a wagon accident.  Thinking that an obit for either of them might mention the whereabouts of brother James who had also emigrated someplace as the will mentions the three of them, saying that "if they chose to return to Ireland". James is not the James Crossett that died in Philadelphia in 1927.
