Lincolnshire / Spalding Parish Registers
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 12:38 BST (UK)  »
There is a baptism on FreeReg for Ann Harris daughter of Robert & Susanna 22 Sep 1689.

In order to see if there is any further information in the parish register, I then went to lincstothepast.com

This period is covered by this register.

SPALDING ST MARY & ST NICOLAS PAR/1/2
General register
Baptisms 1671-1742/3.
Marriages 1671-1742/3.
Burials 1671-1742/3.

However, there are no baptisms here - am I going slightly mad?

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Baptism Lookup Please for a brickwall
« on: Saturday 16 June 12 11:17 BST (UK)  »
Ann Eldred married Bernard Baine at Peterborough Cathedral in 1750. I know that BB was living in London at the time of his marriage so it is possible that Peterborough was AE's 'hometown'.

Her memorial says that she was 65 when she died in July 1789, this gives a birth around 1724.

I would really appreciate any help or guidance on this one.

Just wondering if anyone has access to the MI's for these 2 churches and whether there are any references to the Harris or Buckworth families expecially in the 17th & 18th centuries

Other Countries / East India Company Records Guidance
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently obtained the data from an EIC Cadet register entry as follows:-

Name: Forrester Rose
Presidency to serve in: Bombay
Nominating director (of cadet): Mr Tatem
Date of examination by the Court and Committee: 26 February 1777
Ship on which embarked to India: Colebrooke

I have been trying to unravel this man for some time (he is my g g g g grandfather).

He fathered an illegitimate child in 1765 (to a 28 year old woman) and was married in Edinburgh (to a different woman) in 1793. The marriage record shows him being of Edinburgh, late of London & formerly of Madras. His mother died before 1758 & in view of the dob of the illegitimate child, he must have been born before 1750. This seems to make him quite old to be an EIC Cadet.

I accept that there may be 2 Forrester Rose's, but it is such an unusual name ......

If he was a Cadet, there must be more information somewhere, so I would really appreciate some guidance from anyone with more expereince / knowledge on EIC records than I have.

many thanks

Does anyone have any thoughts on the make of this car? I believe that in the early days, one bought a car without the body & then took it to a coachbuilders to have it completed as you wanted it. The passenger is my wifes g g grandmother aged 86.

« on: Thursday 22 December 11 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
In the church at Bratoft, there is a memorial board to the soldiers who lost their lives in the 1st World War.

I took a photo of the board when I was there & now cannot locate it. :(

I would be really grateful if anyone could either take a photo and send it to me or just let me have a transcription of the names, etc.

fyi Thomas Scott bapt Bratoft in 1747 is my 4 x gg father & I am sure that there are 3 Scott's on the memorial.

thanks in advance

Essex / Essex Record Office SEAX
« on: Thursday 03 November 11 12:14 GMT (UK)  »
Just found out from the ERO that all Essex PR's up to 1837 will be available on SEAX in the next week or so. It will be a pay to view service at (I believe) £5 a day or £25 for a week.

Later records will be available as well, parishes starting with A-G will be online at the same time and others will then follow. Some records under 50 years old won't be available.

England / Keates Brick Wall
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 21:51 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if this posted in the wrong place, but it seemed the most logical to me as it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else.

I am sure that most people doing family research will at some stage hit a brickwall, I have several but on all bar one I have still have avenues to explore before giving up or asking for help.

On this one I would appreciate the thoughts & ideas of the community.

On 6th June 1849 Philip Benjamin Scott married Eliza Keats at St Johns in Manchester. Her age is shown as 'full' and her father as James Keats Wine Merchant.

Witnesses William Henry Bateman & Sarah Pagu**. Neither name mean anything to me or fit the tree.

1841 Census - Philip is living in Stepney

1851 Census - Philip is living in Rickergate, Cumberland and shows as 'unmarried?'
Eliza Scott is living in Lambeth, birth date abt 1812 born in London with children George Scott aged 7 and Kate Scott aged 4

1861 census - Eliza is living in St Helier, birth date abt 1815 England, with George J aged 17, Kate E aged 14 and Walter aged 8.
I have not found a record for Philip.

1871 census - Kate is living with her aunt in Jersey
Eliza, now born c1819 Exeter, Philip and Walter now aged 18 are living in Cardiff.

Eliza died in Oct-Dec 1878 in Cardiff, shows birth c1819

The children

George John Scott died on 26th June 1861 by drowning at St Quen's Bay, Jersey. He was bathing with some friends and was unable to get back to the shore against the current. The inquest shows that he shouted to his friends and they managed to get to safety. Sadly George did not & his body was found 3 days later. His death certificate gives his age as 16 years and 8 months. So born in September, October or November 1844. His age, as above, was also given at the inquest along with him being born in London.

Katherine Eliza born 20th May 1846 at Highgate, Kendal. Mother Eliza Scott formerly Keates. So 3 months years before their marriage at Manchester.

Walter born 18th Sept 1852 in Burlington Place, Carlisle. Mother Eliza Scott formerly Keath.

The problem

I cannot locate a George John Scott or Keates born in London at this time.
I cannot find Eliza in 1841.
Philip  has at least 8 vicars as father, grandfather, uncles, great uncles & cousins. I know that he could have had children outside of wedlock, but it does seem to make it less likely.

My theories

That Philip & Eliza married outside the UK first
That George was from Eliza's first marriage or was illegitimate

Finally, fyi Eliza is my great great grandmother

All thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc appreciated.
