Sorry for gaps, but I have only just found this service and do not remember at the moment where to find my note of the details.

Family History Beginners Board / GRO certs by post
« on: Wednesday 18 July 12 23:41 BST (UK)  »
I haven't been able to find anything on their sites to help, so before getting into slow motion e:mail exchange with them, does anyone know if I can send request forms for a dozen different certificates by post with a single cheque or do I have to send a separate cheque with each application form?

Ireland / Help with getting 1865 marriage details
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 06:52 BST (UK)  »
I believe that my ancestors GEorge Stewart Hill and Louisa Caroline Richardson were wed 5-4-1865 in Rathdown, parish of Monkstown, Dublin.

Searching for the registry info on LDS I came up with Rathdown Marriages 1865 vol 7 page 793 digital folder 419382 for George - but this didn't mention Louisa and no search for Louisa has come up with anything.

Nothing daunted I went to order an on-line certificate from Roscommon, but they want me to tell them bride and groom names, NOT just the reference.  As I couldn't find Louisa on LDS I fear putting her on my application will result in a not found, and there does not seem to be a way of getting the certificate without supplying her name.

All I want is any available information on George's mother.

Any suggestions/help appreciated

Surrey / FH resources in Guildford

I will be in Guildford (on foot) at the and of August/start of September this year, and I would be grateful for any information about what easy to reach facilities are there for me to plan on visitting - along the lines of of libraries, county records, FH societies etc which you have experience of.

Family History Beginners Board / Advice / Suggestions
« on: Wednesday 16 May 12 10:28 BST (UK)  »
I will be travelling to UK at the end of August for a couple of weeks, during which time I hope to get same FH research done.

I need the information off 12-15 GRO certificates and have already identified 4 documents I need to see at the National Archives.

Geographically my ancestors are in Sussex, Berkshire, Suffolk and South Wales/Gloucester.

I understand that free access to certain databases is available in UK Libraries (?and the National Archives?) which is only otherwise by subscription.

My present plan is to spend most of my research time at the National Archives, and would welcome any advice/experience/warnings.

Is it possible to get the information off the GRO certificates without waiting for (and paying for) the copies to be produced?

Will I be able to see images of the Actual census forms?

Any and all suggestions welcome to help me make the most of my time in UK.

Thanks, peter

Census and Resource Discussion / 1841 census - double entry???
« on: Wednesday 09 May 12 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone any experience / knowledge of a person appearing in 2 different villages in the 1841 census.  I am assuming that the enumeration was not done on one night and that being the first comprehensive census the instructions may not have been clear / understood.

I ask because I have a Harriet Denman aged 50 born Sussex, shown as being at West Hoathly and another one with same details shown as being at Worth, East Grinstead.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Salt - Aldbourne early 17th Century
« on: Thursday 26 April 12 21:34 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down the John Salt said to have married Jeane Gold 29-12-1656 in Aldbourne, Wiltshire.

The only possibility I have been able to find so far is a Jone Salt christened at Aldbourne 28-1-1637, but this might be a girl, though there is no obvious mention of the child afterwards unless it is my John Salt.

Any better information or suggestions will be welcome.

P.S.Thanks Jane for previous response.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / 28-1-1637 christening Aldbourne, Wilts
« on: Wednesday 25 April 12 09:02 BST (UK)  »
According to IGI (or whatever less snappy title it goes by these days) a female Jone Salt was christened at Aldbourne 28-1-1637 the child of John Salt and Edy.

It would be good for me if the christenee was actually a John and the 'female' has been assumed by the data collector.

If anyone has the time / inclination to check this out for me I would be grateful.

At the same time, any better guess at the mother's name would assist (I suspect it is Edith).

Thank you.

Europe / Read this if you think YOU have problems (Russia)

Much against the grain I am thinking I will have to abandon this particular search, but just before doing so I thought I would put it here to see if anyone has any ideas which could keep my hopes alive.

First of all I am not even sure any of it is true as it might have been made up to cover up an inconvenient pregancy (though I believe abortions were readily available on demand at the time).

One of my grandson's, great grandfathers is said to have been a former German Prisoner of war who remained in Moscow after the war.  His forename is said to have been Werner and is said to have been in the Luftwaffe.

He is said to have been killed in a Moscow road accident in March 1951 shortly after starting a daughter.

I have people in Moscow (totally uninterested in family history research unfortunately, but) who might be prevailed upon to do some research as long as they are given chapter and verse about where to go and what to look for.

My experience in the Soviet Union before Gorbachev tells me that a large proportion of the population were engaged in keeping records on the rest and if a German was living in Moscow I would expect him to be of great interest, considering Stalin's attitude to them, but I have no idea where to start.

I would also expect plenty of paperwork about the road accident, even if there is no newspaper report.

So if anyone has experience of such a search or even ideas of what records could be sought I would like to hear from them (I think).
