The Common Room / Deaths at Sea 1850s or early 1860s
« on: Sunday 05 November 23 04:20 GMT (UK)  »
I was informed that the first husband of a g---grandmother of mine, named John Evoy, died at sea in the 1850s period, up to 1862 at the latest.
He was a sailor. Would there be a record?
Any ideas on where to look? Sailors records seem to be scattered, and I have read that they were only kept for 5 year intervals?

I have commented a few times that all local district registration office records were moved to the central GRO about 15+ years ago.
A recent example of where this came up is this thread
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=877011.0
However, I wonder if this is actually true?

Background:
In the 1990s and early 2000s - through at least 2004 - my parents and I would spend a few days a year in the registration office in Wexford, which held the original local district registration BMD registers for all of the county - for four Superintendent Registration districts; Wexford, New Ross, Enniscorthy, and Gorey. We paid a small fee to spend the day examining the original registers, one book at a time, and making extracts.
This had at least 3 advantages:
- The books were all locally indexed, so one could look at specific surnames in small locatities - individual registration districts.
- These were the original registers, so no question of copying errors, as sometimes arises with the GRO versions, which are copies.
- The original registers contain the actual signatures (or marks) of the parties or informants concerned.

However, at some point after 2004 I was informed that this facility to inspect the original registers was no longer available, as "all" the registers were being moved to the central GRO for "safety".

I interpreted "all" to mean a national policy to move the original local registers. However, I now wonder if I misinterpreted what was meant.

What I did not know at the time, but became evident, was that the building housing the registration office in Grogan's Road, which also contained the Wexford public health clinics, was due to be replaced. The former building was demolished, and replaced by a completely new, larger, facility.
Knowing that, it is now easy to understand, in retrospect, that of course the registration office records had to be moved, for safekeeping.

So,
- Was this peculiar to Wexford, or were the original records elsewhere also moved to the GRO?
- I must inquire in Wexford as to whether the original records were ever returned, or if they are still at the GRO

Ireland / Apparent Error in GRO Copy, Can GRO Check Original?
« on: Wednesday 04 October 23 06:21 BST (UK)  »
When we look at BDM registrations online what we see are the GRO copies, not the originals. This obviously leaves open the possibility of an error in the copy.

I think I have encountered a case of such an error. In the online GRO copy of the marriage registration for Paul Roche in Wexford in 1881, his father's name is given as Thomas Kehoe.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1881/11004/8023666.pdf

Now Thomas Kehoe is also the name of the bride's father on the preceding entry. To me, this looks like a case of a copying error - copying the name in the preceding entry.

Has anyone had any success in getting the GRO to check the original registration? If so, how does one go about this?

Ireland / How Was the Established Church Supported in Corporate Towns and Cities?
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 05:34 BST (UK)  »
As you are probably all aware, tythes were payable to support the clergy of the Established Church.
But tythes were only payable on agricultural land, and were not payable on any land within the boundaries of corporation towns and cities. [Some extra-parochial areas were also exempt].

So, how were the clergy of the Established Church supported in town/city parishes? In much reading over the years, I never saw an answer to this question.

Ireland / President Biden's Roche and Fox Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 12 April 23 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Much is being made of President Biden's Finnegan and Blewitt ancestors from Louth and Mayo, respectively.

But what of his other Irish ancestors, where did they hail from - anyone know? In particular, the Roches and Foxes?

Citing unprecedented advances in AI technology and capabilities, the Virtual Treasury Project and NAI today announced that they have successfully recreated the previously destroyed individual census returns from 1841, 1851 and 1881.

The newly restored returns will be made available on the NAI website in "early 2024".

Well known Irish genealogist Claire Santry has welcomed this development as "the best news for Irish family historians since 1922".

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA Testing of Hair?
« on: Friday 10 March 23 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have some historic lockets of hair,  from a great-grandmother and great-aunt.
I wonder - is there any way to have some of those DNA tested?
And then get the results into Ancestry or FindMyPast?
