Carlow / Re: John Hayes
« on: Wednesday 24 July 13 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Not an expert by any means so take the following with a word of caution !!.

His death and therefore obviously his marriage and birth of his sons etc was before civil registration in Ireland(1864 I think).Earliest complete census of Ireland available is 1901.
So for any Irish records you will be relying on church records.

Online Carlow records are scarce at best eg RootsIreland (pay site) has nothing for Carlow.
You say they were RC but there are some COI baptism marriage and death records for Carlow free at;
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

Where I found the headstone record;

was;http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/Site_index.htm

Reckon your best bet is to contact the Leighlin Parish Office and see if they have anything on that particular family.Found them very helpful before.

PS have relatives buried in Ballyknockan .It was (is) now a mixed graveyard ie both catholic and protestant I think.

Good luck and if you need any local knowledge dont hesitate to ask.

Presume this is the headstone
"
Erected by P. Hayes, J.P., The Oaks, St. Leonard's, Sydney, in memory
of his Father John Hayes, who died 18 April 1858, 63 years.  R.I.P.
                  [An upright stone."

Assuming they were RC. then Leighlinbridge parish office would be your best bet for marriage and baptismal details.
Contact details should be easy enough to find.

(think I posted them on a thread in Carlow forum last week).

As regards census records ;no nothing for Ireland until 1901. You could try Griffiths Valuation but that will just give the householder/landowner and address but no details re. other people in the house.

Tipperary / Re: Dower Clonmel

Found that before on ancestry but was unable to find them on 1901 census.Also found a Patrick Dower married to a Catherine Mullins on 16 08 1863 in Kill Waterford(RootsIreland).

Reading that piece from the obit. it may be the case that the relationship was through O Rourke and not Dower.Found this family on the 1901 census;

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Waterford/Waterford_Urban_No__3/Mountsion_Avenue/1765126/

Was just posting to see if anyone was researching the same family.
Thanks for your interest.

Tipperary / Dower Clonmel
« on: Monday 22 July 13 11:07 BST (UK)  »
Was just wondering if anyone on here is or was researching the surname Dower.
Reason I am asking is that I have a small bit of my family tree to resolve and have reached a dead end.
Think (almost certain!) that this is the family I am interested in;

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Inishlounaght/Rathkeevin/908650/

My connection or otherwise is complicated and vague.Basically have a great grandmother who am unable to place regarding birthplace etc.The Dower connection comes from an obit. of her son who died in Waterford in the 1950s;

Her son Patrick(O)Byrne died in Waterford in 1951 and the mourners included a Mr and Mrs Ml Dower Clonmel as cousins of the deceased.From the paper;

"The remains were received at the Cathedral by Rev. W. Hallinan, Rev. P. Power officiating at the graveside.
The chief mourners included Mrs Margt. O'Byrne (widow), Mr Timothy O'Byrne (son), Mr Denis Nolan (nephew), Mr & Mrs ML Dower and Mr David O'Rourke Clonmel (cousins). "

Tried  many variations and combinations of Dower,O Rourke,Mullins,Mullen,Byrne etc. on Familysearch, RootsIreland ,Ancestry, etc. but without anything definite jumping out at me.

Have tried this angle before in the general Ireland thread but decided to try it here to see if anything turns up.

Hi
Don't know anything re. that particular family but if she was born in Leighlinbridge at that time then the parish office there might be worth a ring or email. A year or two ago I had a query and found them very helpful. Called down there a couple of times(only live a few miles away) and looked through the transcripts of the baptismal records. Also got to look at the original books. One lady I was talking to on the phone rang me back with a list of all the children born to a particular couple including baptismal dates etc.

Ok just coming back to this now.
Have looked at the original parish register in Leighlinbridge and it gives just groom and brides names plus their respective addresses ie Seskin Leighlin and Mensal Lodge Old Leighlin.Witnesses are a James Byrne (brother of groom am almost certain) and Cath. McCardle (surname to be found locally).
No mention of parents,letters of freedom etc etc.

Now for the bit where I ask ;does it look likely,possible or off the wall

Found a David O Rourke born Clonmel 1910 with mother nee Dower so assume that is where the people mentioned in the obit. in my first post are related.

Also on Rootsireland got just one hit for a Dower Mullins wedding;Patrick Dower married Catherine Mullins in Kill Co. Waterford in 1863.
A Patrick Dower born 1869 Kilsheelan Civil District son of Patrick and Catherine Dower(no maiden name given)
An Ellen Dower born 1874 Marfield Clonmel daughter of a Patrick Dower.
A Mary Dower born 1867 Marfield Clonmel as above.
A William Dower born 1870 as above.
A Michael Dower born 1864 son of a Patrick Dower born Cashel Civil District.

The above are the only ones on the site to look remotely relevant.
Am running out of free searches so looks like I may invest a few bob to make progress.

Does it look worthwhile to get a few records or am I just trying to support a few wild guesses.

Laois (Queens) / Dempsey Rosenallis Graveyard
« on: Tuesday 09 April 13 13:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Its a long shot but here goes.
Looking for anyone who may have some headstone details etc. from Rosenallis graveyard.

Person (persons) I am interested in is Mary Dempsey and her husband Edward.
As much as I know ;
Their daughter Maria Dempsey(later Cronley) was born August 1854 in Drummond Rosenallis and parents names given were Edward Dempsey and Mary Doogan.Only possible marriage that I can find that is even close is that of Murt Dempsey to a Mary Dune on Feb. 1 1853 in Mountmellick Civil District.
Their daughter married M. Cronley in Capard in July 1878 and her address was given as Drummond and fathers name as Edward Dempsey.Her husband is also from Drummond Rosenallis.

Looking for headstone details etc. as searching for Edward or Mary Dempsey in that general area and time frame for deaths gives too many possible results.

Going by marriage and birth details Mary Dempsey would have to have been born between about 1815 at the earliest and 1835 or so at the latest.
Neither Mary or Edward appear on the 1901 census as far as I can see so presume they died before that.Only remote possibility for Edward is

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Queen_s_Co_/Clonaslee/Gorragh_Lower/1646795/

Know its a bit confusing.Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.(esp. to Seanmac. who gave me a good few headstone details from Rosenallis before)
Denis.

Thanks for that.
Looks like they met halfway so and just got her brother to marry them.Another sister of hers got married to a Keogh from Baltinglass about this time.Looks like he was marrying off his siblings as his brother married a woman from Dunlavin ,Wicklow which was a long way from Rosenallis in the 1870s.
