Carlow / Re: Bagnalstown Patt Clynch and Mary Byrne

Noland01, thank you. The Iowa records state James was born at Btown and state William was born Carlow with no distinction of town/county. William's entry in NLI is clear, so finding him gives some evidence of at least two siblings baptized at Btown. The Griffiths record is news for me, thank you. Was the mention Byrne the eye catcher for you?

The Bagenalstown bit actually as that's my home parish.

No hits on find my past regarding Clinch baptism in Carlow around that time that I could see.
Looking at the baptismal records for Carlow it seems that Clinch was rare enough name ,with the majority of the records found in either Rathvilly or Clonegal parish's.

That the baptism above transcribed as William Glinsk parents Patrick and Mary Byrne and sponsors Thomas Byrne and Mary Cavana ?

Quick scroll through the transcribed baptisms up to 1830 doesn't seem to show any more children baptised to this couple that I could see.
Some of the pages are damaged /hard to read but would imagine at least one more sibling would appear.

Griffiths Valuation gives just 1 Clinch for Carlow;Robert clinch on Staplestown Road in Carlow town.

See an Ellen Howard baptised 4th September 1826 in Rosenallis Parish to a Pat and Nelly Howard.

Thank you! That is probably a little early for my Ellen as she was born around 1834.

Wouldn't get too hung up on birth years as from experience they can vary greatly from reality .

Perhaps Patrick and William were Catherine's brothers? There also appears to be a connection to the Flannery family.

One of my Ancestry DNA matches has a couple: Patrick MANGAN b. 1844 in Castlebar,  married to Ellen FLANNERY b. 1845 Beltra, Castlebar. She has Patrick dying in 1931 still in Mayo, and Ellen on 20 Nov 1890, again in Mayo.

She lists Patrick's parents as Nicholas and Margaret, but gives no sources!! Nicholas's mother's maiden name is also given on her tree as Flannery (Mary Flannery b. 1779 in Mayo).

Another DNA match has the same parents as in a record I listed above (Patrick Mangan, Bridget Mulloy) and lists them as having a child Patrick MANNING, b. 1818 (but she has the parents marrying in 1826?  ???). She also lists several other children of the couple, but no Catherine.

I'm really not sure on how thorough their research is, but I think I'll have to try and find records substantiating these claims!  :)

These look like the couple (Patrick and Ellen Mangan) referred to above.

Waterford / Re: Mount Melleray School

Have you looked at the size of neighbouring farms?
I wouldn't call 30 acres increasing to 70 typical.
I call that a big farm for its time. That said I picked a page at random in Co.Carlow and many of the farms there do appear to be bigger than any county I've looked at to date.
I'd call 5 to 10 acres typical.

I own the adjoining farm so yes I would be aware of the size of farms in the area. Their father tenanted 30 acres on Griffiths Valuation and had this along with another 40 acres which became their home farm by c. 1870 or so as thats when my great grandfather married their sister. I am certain of later farm size as I have the original landlords rent book here for 1879 to c.1883 which lists the acreage valuation and payments of all the farms owned by the landlord.

They were typical of their time and area .Their uncles were also tenant farmers in the same area with farms ranging from 40 to 60 acres.

My question was really what would bring 2 kids such a distance unless both were intending to study for the priesthood.
Obit was written on his death in 1917 and 5 siblings were alive at that stage. Says he received his early education at Mt. Melleray along with his brother who did get ordained .Was Mt Melleray a seminary ?

Dragging up an old thread I know but its the only one I could find on Mount Mellary .

Have emailed them a while ago regarding records but no reply as of yet .

My interest is that I recently found an obituary of a relative which states he attended the above school along with his younger brother .
He was born in Carlow in 1834 and his brother in 1837 .They would have been typical tenant farmers of the time I would imagine ;c.30 acres on Griffiths Valuation and about 70 acres farmed by 1880 or so .
Mount Mellary is 50/60 miles from where they were born and no connection to the area that I can find .

Just wondering if this was unusual for the time .One brother became a Priest whilst the older one emigrated to the US and worked as a journalist there and later back in Ireland .
