Thanks for your insight.
It's a shame I will never know more of their journey.

Gloucestershire / Somerford Keynes to Swansea
« on: Saturday 05 May 12 21:12 BST (UK)  »
My Gr. Grandparents, Matthew and Jane Arnold left the village of Somerford Keynes with their family around mid 1870s.  I visited the village a couple of weeks ago (April 2012).  I surmised that the reason for leaving (apart from wanting a new start), was economic: agricultural area to industrial area.
I wondered why Swansea?  They passed Bristol (docks, industry), Newport, and Cardiff (same), to settle in Swansea.
Also I wondered how they would have traveled in that time (Somerford Keynes to Swansea), and how long would it have taken?
Does anyone have any ideas or leads for me?
Thanks
Phil

Hi Glenn:
I never did receive a PM from you about the Southern Ontario look-up.  I am willing to do what I can.

Hi Glenn:
Elmira is about 90 minutes away from me (in London) but I am willing to do what I can either by phone or email at first, and if necessary when I am in the area I'll have a look.
Please give me all the pertinent information you can about the the person you're seeking.
I'll do what I can.  It may not be fast but I will keep in touch and let you know what is going on.
Regards
Phil Arnold

Wiltshire / Re: Criminal trial at Malmesbury Wilts
« on: Monday 25 July 11 13:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi Dave:
Thanks for that info.  I have a page titled "Prisoners On Bail Who Have Not Been In The Governor's Custody."  Among prisoner details it lists the Committing Magistrate, Date of Warrant, Offence as Charged, Before Whom Tried, Verdict, and finally, Sentence (no details).
The problem is that I found out that he was at first committed to Broadmoor Lunatic Asylum (problem is that Broadmoor didn't start to accept male patients until 1864 (Matthew was convicted in 1860).  He later sent to Portsea Prison (1861 Eng census).  He was released on Licence after two years.
It's the Broadmoor bit that confuses me.  I was hoping there would be judge's comments or details of the sentencing.
His co-villain (John Edward Pickett was released on "No Bill".  I'd like to know why.
Phil
PS I'm in Canada so it isn't to easy to get stuff from the WSHC--they copied and mailed the trial depositions.

Wiltshire / Criminal trial at Malmesbury Wilts
« on: Monday 25 July 11 02:29 BST (UK)  »
My gr. grandfather was tried at Malmesbury for sheep stealing (oh, the shame).  I have been very fortunate in getting a copy of the witness depositions for trial from the Wiltshire Family Centre.  It made fantastic reading.
Does anyone know if a record of the trial might survive (judge's comments, detailed sentencing comments, etc.).  I have seen the criminal index but it raises some questions as to the place of trial and internment.  Details if necessary.
Thanks...pupetaxe

Thanks Morgan.  I live in Canada so checking the obits will have to wait until I make a trip to UK.  I know they won't be online.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Devizes Sessions
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 17:21 BST (UK)  »
If a trial (1860) is held in Devizes for a crime that was committed around Somerford Keynes, would the bad guy automatically be imprisoned in Devizes or was there another prison they may have been taken to?  Might prison records have survived?
Also, Matthew Arnold (the bad guy was my Gr. Grandfather), had apparently, turned King's Evidence against his fellow bad guys--would there be a record of that anywhere?
Thanks.  Pupetaxe
