Just spotted the John Jeffrey posts.  My John Jeffrey, the Master Shoemaker, seems to be the one mentioned.  Mine was the eldest brother of my 2 x Gt Gran.  I have a copy of his death certificate and the names of his three wives.

I found one death for a James Brooker - at Stockton District in Co Durham in 1860.   There is a burial index for James Brookes (often mistaken r for s) in Sunderland the same year but I don't have access to these.

If James died at Stockton he could have been working at the shipyards that were then.

Just seen a post saying that someone has the marriage certificate for William Brooker & Esther Gorton.   The post said to pm that person with an email address and he/she would email a copy of the MC.   Do you think I could have a copy too, please?   Not sure how I pm anyone though - so would some kind person tell me?

By the way I, too, have Esther Gorton (m Brooker) as being the daughter of Richard Gorton & Esther Benson.   Esther Gorton was baptized on 12 September 1779 at Eccleston (with Douglas Chapel), near Croston (nr Chorley).

Did James die in a Sunderland Workhouse?   I found his widow living in Sunderland with her son George Brooker who obtained Masters & Mates Certificates at Sunderland (2nd Mate issued 10.11.1869, 1st Mate issued 22.05.1877 and Masters issued 20.03.1876).   I thought his widow Jane had already been widowed before she moved to Sunderland - but I did not check it out thoroughly.

Only one child remained in the Sunderland area after she married - it looks as though some returned to Cumberland.

This is a very interesting family history as far as I can see - and yes, my own great-grandfather was a ship's carver.

Thank you for letting me know,Suzard.   James (my gt-grandfather) was married to Hannah Bunting in 1871 but his first wife was Isabella who died c1863 (have date somewhere).

Would you let me know whether he was also married to Susan because it's a name I've never come across in my searches?

Many thanks.

Joyce

I can see that these listings are a few years old but in case you're still checking I have lots of info re James Doy b 1833 in East Rudham, Norfolk.   He was my great-grandfather.   He was a widower when he married Hannah and they had five daughters together.
