Armed Forces / Boer War Deaths where buried?
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Have an ancestor who died in 1900 in Boer War at Ladysmith, Natal, SA as reported in the Times Newspaper 1900, courtesy of rootschatters.  The question is where would they be buried?  In the UK or in SA?  Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Boxall in Census 1851-1871 help please
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Having major difficulty locating Harry Boxall b 1846 (according to his marriage cert in 1882, he was living in Preston, Lancs at the time and was a Color Sergeant in THe Kings Royal Rifle Corps).  His father was Henry Boxall occupation Gardener and deceased by 1882 marriage of Harry.  Do not know where in the country they were living unless they were out of the country.  Boxalls seem to be populating the South East area of the UK.  Any help appreciated.  Just need a fix to find his age and where born.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Kings Royal Corps 1882 - what is it?
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 20:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone tell me if the Kings Royal Corps was in fact the Kings Royal RIfle Corps as my ancestor was a Color Sergeant in 1882 at Preston in Lancashire.  Trying to find what battles he may have been in to prove a link with parentless children in 1881 census in Winchester Barracks all born in India which I think are his family as he was a widower when he married in 1882.

Thanks

The Common Room / Occupation on Marriage Cert - help!
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Cannot read the occupation on the marriage cert of Harry Boxall to Charlotte Riordan.  I think it begins with a C as the last word is Corps.  Any suggestions would be welcome.  This image section is the only part with this first letter.

Many thanks in advance  :D

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Which port in Ontario 1917-1919
« on: Sunday 23 October 05 00:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Have found ancestors who married in UK in 1917 and have a child born in Windsor, Essex County, Ontario around 1918, and my direct line in 1919.  What ship and what port would they have sailed from and to for Windsor?  Was it direct or via Ellis Island?  Have tried some net resources but meeting a dead end.

Any info appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi all

Baffled by this couple as cannot find a marriage for them.

John Pain POWELL married to a Sarah.  IGI shows them as parents for 3 children in Kingswinford, Staffs.  They youngest was Mary Maria Monnington POWELL my direct ggmother.  She says she is from Pensnett area.  Cannot find any one except her in 1856 on IGI at Kingswinford.   Not had any other success.  Can anyone point me in right direction?

Thanks

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1861 for John Pain POWELL
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 00:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Could SKS look up 1861 census for me?
Desparately trying to find John Pain POWELL and his wife Sarah with 3 children:
John Henry Powell (b 1853)
William Powell (b 1854)
Mary Maria Monnington Powell (b1856)

All 3 children were born at Kingswinford though Mary says in 1881 When she was married) she was from Pensnett.  Is this place in Worcester or Staffordshire?

I have John and WIlliam in 1881 census and my direct line Mary in 1881.  Cannot find anybody earlier, not even the marriage of John Pain POWELL and Sarah.

Thanks

Staffordshire / Lost Rowley marriage - Help!
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

A puzzle that has taken 7 years and is proving extremely difficult, brick wall territory.  Basically my great grandfather is not in the GRO records!

John ROWLEY (b Dec 1858 Wolverhampton) married a Mary (Maria Monnington) POWELL (b Dec 1856 Pensnett, Staffs) between 1875-1882 in Staffordshire around the Cannock/Hednesford area I believe.  In 1881 census they are together but no children just John's younger sister.  Have now found all the birth certs for the 7 children and the oldest Louisa b 1882 in Hednesford area ie Brindley Heath.  Have checked Dudley Archives for Pensnett registers and can only finid one possible Mary Powell 20 years either side of her census birth date.  Have tentative parents but not sure until I can find a marriage cert.  I know they died in Co Durham in 1920's and have all the death certs which states her name as Mary Maria Monnington Powell.  All I can assume is it must have been a register office marriage IF they married.  Have checked various parish records from around the Cannock area etc and cannot find any trace.  Question is now what do I do?  Help!
