Hi Minniehaha,

many thanks for your interest in this.

The sailing information confirms my memory of Amy arriving about 1950. Didnt know she was in UK about 6 months.

It would be useful to have the notices to piece fragments together.

I've been delving the Loft family, both Georges history and then when several Lofts arrived in melbourne about 1883, and that's been intriguing.  I'm still looking for a probable date of arrival by Amy into NZ, most likely as a Wiliams, but could be as a Hill.  Even with a Hill, who knows?

I note that some 1600 views have been made. All help appreciated.

Hi MH,

in your last posts you suggested that the two youngest of George , James and Leonard, may have been left behind in care in Melbourne whlist George and his sons Alfred and Edward sailed to NZ on the Rotomahana in 1886 following the death of Dora.

I have a further find.  Actually a correction, where in the last sailing list I trawled I only looked at the default first 25 records to be displayed, hence only showing 2 minors sailing with father george, and I hadnt noticed that the alphebtical list of Loft only went up to initail J.  From this I assumed only two minors had sailed with George.

I have revisited the list and increased the default to 50 and found another son ( listed as Master 'L'  b1883) sailing with father George-most likely Leonard!!!.  So it would seem it could be baby James, at 1 year old, was left behind in care.

Hope this helps.

Hi MH,

Good research there mate.  I had been delving within orphanage records for Victoria to find any leads, curious to find which port they sailed to.

Our dates and findings correlate.

I have found some, unconfirmed evidence from old newspapers, that they may have travelled south to Dunedin, South Island, in 1895 as listed in Otago times. 6/7/1895.

then I found a death  9/10/1887 age 45 one Edward Loft, Dunedin, Bootmaker, (but listed as from scotland) but the dates tie in and it would give a d.o.b of 1842..

So, are there scottish elements of the Loft family?

Hi Masterhatter,

bit more for you.

Dora Loft (nee Higginson) (Georges Wife) did indeed die in melbourne at Melbourne East hospital 1886 (PRO-Vic Reg No 1886/2293). George was the d/c informant.

James would have been 1 year old approx. He was born in Australia/Melbourne/Footscray 1885 reg no 1885/17755

Correction to my Rotomahana sailing list to NZ --it was George with 2 minor males, only Alfred and Edward tying up with ages as listed.  3 Loft total, sailing

I am still trying to find their movements within NZ .

Hi Suz,

just done some more digging.

Sydney is down as 16/6/1905
Leslie                      1906   poss  30/5/1906
Amy                   dob      17/12/1882    . p.o.b   Great Barr , Birmingham. That area seems to have changed boundaries a few times.

I think Amy might have gone alone, deduced from sailings lists.  there is no census record for her in 1911.  The two children were left behind, but trawls have drawn a blank for them.

John Hill listed as 'Iron works manager'

thanks for replying so quick.

Rallenza.

Hi,

I have trawled the surname search,  and need some help.

I am looking for a John HILL who 'married' an Amy WILLIAMS sometime between 1900 and 1905. Or so the birth certificates imply.

Amy at some point, it seems thereon emigrated to NZ.

I have located a John Hill grave at Warstone Cemetary 1911 but no obvious link.

John Hill is listed on the birth cert of two boys, Sydney and Leslie.

Has anyone delved into this family before?

Hopeful,

Rallenza

masterhatter, et al

many thanks for the data re: george, edward, and alfred, and dora. I had found that alfred LOFT and dora HIGGINSON had the same register number so that became defacto. And that raised further questions about a Muriel and why?.

I have checked sailings and a small batch of Lofts  - indeed 3 males - sailed SS Rotomahana to NZ  possibly march 1886, because i noted no female listed on the manifest.  her death explains why. The ages tie up though, and i had been asking myself did she return to UK?  Clearly no.

You've no need to apologise MH, every bit of info is useful to build up a probable picture.

Alfred born 9/10/1878 i think. He became a farm estate worker and sheep shearer within NZ and according to my mum was a 'good father'.

I've not found a link yet for Muriel Morris, but clearly we know she was not his birth mother.

3 months ago i feared i would not be able to find his history before 1917, now we are sure of the family back to 1807!   How amazing.

Hi Janette, and other interested readers,

A renewed delve into Amy's husband Alfred (b.9/10/1878 Rochdale lanc's   d.17/05/1973 Masterton, NI ) finds that his marriage certificate did not quite tell the truth insofar that his mother was Dora nee Higginson, not Muriel Morris. His father was indeed George born in 1855 in Beverley Yorks the son of Robert & Sarah, who had 4 other  sons  James, William,Alfred and edward, and 2 daughters Mary and Jane. Sarah becamed widowed in1869.

After marrying in Rochdale Geortge and Dora settled in Rochdale for a short while.

in 1883 George  (28) & Dora (25) decided to emigrate with his young family, Alfred being 2 and newborn Edward  aboard the SS Pathan which docked in Albany (1/8/1883), Adelaide, melbourne (13/8/1883), and Sydney.

I would welcome a little help, from melbourne onwards, to put together his movements within NZ up to masterton. Its possible in mitigation that Alfred didnt remember his birth mother Dora.

I'm not entirely clear thereafter A;freds marriage in 1917 in Wellington ,  but i do remember Amy and cousin Gloria visiting us in 1950, and still have a veneered 12" ruler she bought me as a present. I digress.

This little batch of info transpired after seeing 2 new co-respondents to the surname search patterns, within the UK, and originally thinking it didnt relate to me, but i posed the question to the forum.

I do find this trawling fascinating. However previously i had made the mistake of presuming he emigrated as an adult, and direct to NZ, and of course the family did neither.
