Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Is he my Great-Grandfather?
« on: Friday 22 January 21 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just tried to draw a quick tree to illustrate what you are describing and if I have understood correctly then you and the grandchild of John Smith are half 1st cousins 1x removed? Your grandmother would be a half aunt to the granddaughter?

The DNA of your Grandmother to the granddaughter of John Smith is in the right range for a half aunt / niece relationship. Yours is also in the correct range. Have a look at this chart for the ranges: https://thegeneticgenealogist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Relationship_Chart_FINAL_August_2017.jpg

But maybe I misunderstood the relationships - if so I apologise!

Sara,

In a while, weeks or months your ethnicity estimates will change - as others have suggested using the matches and seeing where they take you is much more useful.

I have used this example in other posts: Mum was, for a while, said to be 100% Swedish. She is now down to only 10%.  ;D

Hi,

The ethnicity percentages are just an estimate and I would suggest should be taken with a fairly large pinch of salt! They change as the number of people testing increases and the companies have more data to play with.

I recently acquired 16% Scottish on Ancestry - I have no known Scottish ancestry and none of my other tests on other sites have suggested I am even a tiny % Scottish! Neither of my parents have any Scottish though.

At one point Mum was 100% Swedish - we were amused - it's true though that she has some Danish / German (the border moved) ancestry on paper but as far back and including her 2 x GG parents were all born here in Sussex. She has now lost most of her "Swedish" and is more what we would expect!

Hi,

The average cM for a half brother's son is given as 891 with a range of 500-1446cM on this chart:https://thegeneticgenealogist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Relationship_Chart_FINAL_August_2017.jpg - he would definitely be a half nephew!

If people search and find your code matches how do they contact you .

People will see your email address next to your code and use that to contact you.

Hi,

If you have uploaded your DNA to GEDmatch you should now have a "code" or ID number (for example mine is M105207) which is what people will ask you for if they want to compare your DNA with theirs.

However, once you have that code it means your profile is in the database and will appear in search results of one to many for example - you can search for all the people who match you in descending segment size order. The advantage of this site is that it is free and combines profiles of people who have tested on all the other sites.

You mention people avoiding payment - it's a free site! There are some extras you can pay for but there is no need to unless you particularly want to and certainly not until you are completely happy with all the free aspects of it. I occasionally pay for a month of Tier 1 but only if I know I'm going to have time to do lots of work on my DNA matches. Free access gives you all the details of your matches.

I would recommend having a look at some of the tutorials on YouTube - there are lots like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id7JJ1NoTNk and they get progressively more detailed. These videos can also be accessed via the site.

It is a fantastic site and can really help with DNA but needs a bit of getting used to.

:o  If I had 6 new matches I would be thrilled - I get one every 6 weeks or so!

Hi,

I share 516 with my 1st cousin 1x removed (my cousin's son) and 496 with my Dad's cousin (also my 1st cousin 1x removed). Both of these are about right in the middle of the range for a 1C1R.

Dad shares 1012 with his (known) first cousin - again in the middle of the predicted range.

I would suggest that, yes, you should be looking at the grandparent level for the connection as this is possibly a half 1st cousin? That's where I would start anyway.

(It is a little high, and could even be a half aunt/uncle/niece/nephew?)

;D As Guy says - look on it as a bit of fun but please - never take it seriously!

Over the years the tests I manage have changed dramatically as the various sites update their ethnicity estimates. The most ridiculous being that Mum went from 100% Swedish to (currently) only 10%. The latter is more what we would expect - the former did make us laugh though!
