Carmarthenshire / Mary Hugh Llanelly
« on: Thursday 13 December 12 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism of a Mary Hugh who was born at around 1811 in Llanelly. I am also looking for her marriage to David Rees. Their first son John was born at about 1835, so I am assuming the marriage would be around that date. In the 1841, the family are living at Llanedy, so the marriage could possibly be there?
Thanks, Josh.

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism of Jane Hartland circa 1809

I do not believe that Jane married, as on her children's baptisms, they are recorded as baseborn and on 2 of the baptisms, Jane's occupation is "spinster"

It is a possibility, as I know many other of my ancestors give many different ages throughout their lives, so I shall have to keep this in my notes until I have further evidence

Somerset / Surname Stook and Payne/Paine
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been searching this line of the family and there has been one thing that has confused me. The family surname is Stook, but throughout various census' and bmd certificates, the surname has sometimes been Payne or Paine.
My ancestor Mary Anna Stook was born 1879 in Creech St Michael, the surname stays Stook until she gets married to a William Mitchell in 1900, where her surname is Payne. Her father is also recorded as George Payne, and her sister Emily (a witness) is also Payne.

Mary's father George was born about 1847 in Creech St Michael, his name stays consistent until the 1871 census where he now a Payne. And then jumps back to Stook in the 1881 census onwards to 1911. His first son Thomas' surname was registered as Paine in the birth index in 1867, also Henry in 1871 is registered as Paine. Also a daughter Emily has her name as Payne on her marriage certificate.

George's father was James Stook born about 1818/19 in Spaxton (well one of the birth places he gave in various census') He has his surname as Paine/Payne in the 1871 and 1881 census. Also on the baptism on one of his son's John in 1856, it says "John Paine, child of James Stook and Hannah". Other children and grandchildren of James continued to use the name Payne/Paine a various points in their lives.

I was hoping for some help or some suggestions as to the reason behind all of this?

Regards, Joshua

Sussex / Re: William Lemon in Tangmere

Having had a quick look at his siblings, I'd agree with you saying it runs in the family, I wonder what their father William's occupation was?

I haven't found them on the 1851 census, but William was at sea at the time of that census. Also his wife Martha came from Pembrokeshire, and I have their son living in Pembrokeshire in the 1851.

I shall check out the possible baptisms you mention of Edward and John, thanks for pointing out that for me Roy.

Hi annaS, sorry I also should have mentioned that my William married a Martha, so unfortunately that is not my guy, but a big thanks all the same!

@Roy G, thanks for those baptisms, I didn't think of trying the "Lemmon" variation with 2 M's. Looks like it is my person, my next task is to find out about his siblings and parents. I'll also look into getting membership for the SFHG, should be a great help in researching my Sussex family. It could explain why my William joined the marines at such a young age, with his mother dying young, and his father left to look after 8 children.

Many thanks! Joshua

Sussex / William Lemon in Tangmere

Hi, I am looking for a possible baptism of William Lemon. From his service records as a Royal Marine, I have gathered that he was born on the 3rd of August 1821 at Tangmere, Sussex.
I have no idea as to his parents names or any siblings, but hopefully someone may be able to help or at least point me in the right direction.
Many thanks in advance, Joshua.

World War One / Re: Edwin James Evans, where do I go from here?
« on: Friday 09 March 12 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
Yes unfortunately, would have been a great start to the search otherwise! Ah okay, I've not got a subscription at the moment, but I'll be sure to keep that avenue in mind when I do. And I shall get searching on the National Archives now. Ah that would be unfortunate if the records of Edwin were those destroyed too
