Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: marriage of richard laycock
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
I now have a copy of Richard Laycock and Ann Wilson's wedding certificate. They were married in Langton on Swale on 24th November 1862.
But I'm puzzled and wonder if anyone can explain why, where it says 'father' it says 'Natural child of Ellen Laycock and Thomas Foggy'  so I now know who Richard's father was but in all my other research ,his mother was named as Alice Laycock.....does it mean he was adopted by Alice Laycock ?I can find no trace of an Ellen Laycock except that she was named as the mother of Thomas Laycock too, born 5 years before Richard. Or could Ellen and Alice be one and the same person ? I'm totally confused now.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

My great grandfather RICHARD LAYCOCK born illegitimate 1836 in Warlaby,Ainderby Steeple,North Yorks, to ALICE LAYCOCK ,married ANN WILSON at St Helens Chuch, Ainderby Steeple in 1862.
St Helens had their parish records stolen, does anyone know if I could see a copy of the marriage certificate anywhere on line to see if Richard's father is named on that ?
Or would it just say 'father unknown' in those days ?
I'd love to find this missing piece of my family tree.Has anyone any ideas please?
Thank you.

Thank you Andrea,I didn't have that information although yes I do have the family on the 1871 census.
Now I'm trying to find out who Richard  married,it must have been after the 1861 census, they had their first child,Thomas, in 1861, so it looks like they married  between those 2 dates.
He married Ann  who came from Ellerton, Bolton on Swale,North Yorkshire born 1839. I can't find their marriage so am stuck on her maiden name.Any ideas how I can find out ? I'm very grateful for any help, thanks again, Ruth
