Australia / James SWAINSON policeman Tas and NSW?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 02:43 BST (UK)  »
Seeking to establish if James SWAINSON, who was a constable in Launceston, Tasmania and was promoted to Acting Sergeant around February 1859 is the same James Swainson who was a detective constable in NSW (Yass) in October 1864.
There is a record of a James Swainson leaving Hobart, Tasmania for Sydney in August 1861.
The last mention I can find of him in NSW was at the Central Police Court in May 1866.
Any information greatly appreciated.

Do you know when and where Sarah died?

Im not finding anything on the boys David and John.

A police gazette report of 1878 has her mentioned as Sarah Jane Lynn alias Miller. Another name for me to investigate re her death.

Seeking information on the parents of Sarah Jane Lynn(e). She was supposedly born in Tasmania according to newspaper and police reports, and was sometimes known as "Darkey Jinny". In newspaper reports she was described a being a "creole girl" and in Tasmania Police Gazettes as being a "Mulatto".
She was in both the Hobart and Launceston areas and was imprisoned in 1874 for larceny by the Supreme Court, which had her age as 27 so a birth year of around 1847. However, a later 1876 newspaper report had her age at 34.
She did have many minor brushes with the law resulting in fines and small sentences.
Her mother is mentioned in a newspaper report in December,1872, but it does not name her. She reportedly had helped her daughter out of her last police 'troubles" about 5 weeks previously.
Thanks in anticipation.

This article notes Alice Gregson and Minnie Hill as being different people
1913 'Police Court.', Examiner (Launceston, Tas. : 1900 - 1954), 5 March, p. 4. (DAILY), viewed 26 Mar 2018, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article50696061

Prisoners record for an Alice Gregson here that I suspect to be a sister of Mary Ann

Correct Matthew, Alice and Mary Ann were sisters and the Advocate had merged 2 people into the one item, with the Examiner being correct.
Mary definitely had the one child Harriett. In one article it mentions her in court with 2 lively infants but I feel that one of these may have been Alice's son Walter. I can find no other references to further children.

Can you describe your purpose - are you researching the fate of Mary Ann HILL.........the fate of her daughter Harriet LAURIE nee HILL m. 1897...........origins of mother Mary Ann HILL........so we know where to go with this.

And what information you already have.
The only information I now need thanks to the above is the death date and place of Harriett's mother.
Her name was Mary Ann Gregson born 1855. She married a John Sheen (Sheahy) and lived with John Hill aka Badger for many years in a very violent relationship.
She has a long police record and I have all of these details.
My last evidence of her is in January 1898 living in Queenstown TAS.
She went under the name of Gregson or Hill and very occasionally Sheen

John and Mary Ann were still sparring in 1898

Yes, a very violent relationship since around 1885.

Thank you both so much for the information. Amazing what "fresh" eyes can see.
This has given me lots to work with. I will do another post about Harriett's mother soon as I still cannot find a death record for her.

Any information appreciated. Believed to have been born around 1879 to Mary Ann Gregson, father possibly John Hill aka (Badger). I have a reference to her not attending infant school in Launceston in 1887. My only other reference is to her having a bar room brawl in the Lord Nelson Public House in Hobart in May 1895, stated age of 16 years.
