It is always a difficult decision on whether "to tell or not". I think it will depend largely on the generation of the person involved, the "older" generation often don't take kindly to this sort of thing being brought to their attention, probably having lived with the version they were all told and grew up with.
I speak from experience in this regard. My own father reacted with horror when he discovered that he and his sister were born before their parents marriage when he needed their marriage certificate for a passport application.
I think you have done what you can, if they find the information on your tree, let them contact you for further info, that way they may be more receptive to hearing about it...
