Dublin / Re: Joseph Hunt/Caroline Gormley

If you are trying to find his children's names one thing that worked for me recently, dealing with a similar time frame was the
full Electoral Register database in Pierce Street Library, which goes up to 1962/63.
(If you are in Dublin)
You can search by address and in theory, as they come of age to vote they appear on the register - Just a bit of a short cut then you have some names to cross check with FamilySearch.

This is Bea and Frankie. Lovely photo but would love a coloured version. Taken 1917 just after their wedding in December 1916.
Thanks.

Pastmagic  - I am in Dublin, not London, but still I think your advice is possibly they way to go.
I am actually fairly sure I know who he is now. Not very many candidates in this family !!
P.S. Thanks for your past help on this line. Yourself and ShaneW have helped me no end. Cheers.

Ruskie - Well, that's also an interesting idea that I didn't think of - 1930's, but does not equate with anything I know of the family. In 1850's I have them with a solid business and seemingly profitable enough to allow them to describe themselves as 'gentleman' on various records. By 1930's, the line I have in mind had mostly died out but are now describing themselves as 'labourer' and the need or want of such a painting is beyond me at that point, and I suspect them.
It is framed, and was re framed in the mid 1990s. I attribute the good condition to it having lived in many an attic away from the light.

Thanks Prue for that information - I didn't realise it was unusual at all.
I did a little investigation on the painting today. No signature or anything like that.I don't think it is enamel - the surface is quite mat - satin rather than gloss. It looks like oil to me. Also Under the matt it has moderate flaking of the paint from the surface, and one big area of a 2' x 1' area lifting.
Any help on dating the clothing ???

Yep - it's a proper wall portrait.
I have a candidate in mind for him but want so see if the daters agree to confirm .

Also I don't know if anyone on here specialises in painting but i would be really interested to know WHO would have a need for such a painting and in order to pay for it what type of social class we are looking at. I have old family photos  (1890 - 1900) where the sitters look quite well off, but I know they were poor and had saved and dressed up to have the photo taken. If we are talking 1850's would the same have happened with painting ?

Alec Guinness and Franklin D. Roosevelt
very good!! I can see that. :)

Hi Prue
Yes - I think it's lovely.
The metal plate (without frame) is 17" x 15" 43 cm x 36 cm.
I'm hoping little details like the brass buttons and shirt collar will mean something to someone

Hi All
This painting has been handed down through the family - no nobody seems to know who he is - I know that he his on my dad's side of the family so i wonder, now I have identified  a lot of his ancestors, if I can date it I might be able to give him a name. It is painted on a sheet of copper if that is relevant,
thanks
