No birth reg on freebmd for an Edmund or John Edmund Mellor in that timescale in either Staffs/Worcs or Durham

I cannot find anything either. I can always try to order a certificate from the gro on the information that I have. Now looking for a death certificate for him.

Maybe you would be better to get a copy of one of the daughter's marriage to see if the father was still alive ?

He doesn't appear at all on my grandmothers birth certificate.

There is a discrepancy in Edmunds birthplace in this 1901 entry compared to the 1911 entry which says Durham Darlington

Living in Oldbury Worcs - looks like 3 Sitford/Titford Rd

William Mellor 38 sanitory plumber b Cannock
Annie  30 b Torquay
Jessica  13 b Burton on Trent
Edmund  12 b Darlaston
all following children b Oldbury
Emma  10
Edith  5
Gladys  3
William 9mths
RG13 Piece 2715 Folio 118 Page 1

I suppose it could be a typo or he just thought darlaston and darlington are the same place. darlaston makes more sense in my family though.

A bit of a puzzler in 1891

25 Wesley St Oldbury

William Mellor 28 b Cannock can't decipher occ but it's not the same as the 1901
Emma 27 b Blaenavon Monmouthshire
John E 3 b Darlaston
Jessica  3 b Burton upon Trent
Emma 8mths b Oldbury

That is quite interesting. I suppose he could be called John Edmund Mellor as the dates are about right but a different mother!

Was your wife's grandparent (child of Alexander) born in Scotland  ???

Annie

My wife's grandparent was born in Wigan, Lancashire in 1902. The 1911 census states that Alexander (calling himself Alick on the form) was born in Scotland, but no more than that.

I assume you have this Edith Ivy Mellor married William Pugh June 1937 Birmingham

Looks like her death Edith Ivy Pugh date of birth 7/1/1914 died Sep 1990 age 76 Sandwell West Midlands

Gertrude Irene Perks died 2003 Dudley

Mary Lilian Melia died 2004 Sandwell West Midlands

I knew the names of the sisters but my nan was very tight-lipped about her family. Even my Dad wasn't aware of much about them as she never mentioned them. Certainly I never met any of them.

I am gobsmacked by the amount of information you have been able to collate in such a short time. Thank you very much. Any more information gratefully accepted. Thanks.

The birth shows mothers maiden name was Harrold so presumably her husband Edmund and possible grandparents and maybe aunts/uncles looked after the children.  Or did Edmund re-marry?

Marriages June qtr 1909
Gertrude Harrold/Edmund Mellor     Aston  6d 657

Deaths June qtr 1918
Gertrude Mellor aged    28    Aston  6d   360

That would make sense and I have got some names of Harrolds from the 1901 and 1891 censuses. Or, I suppose he could have sent the children away or wasn't able to keep them. We can surmise that he was still alive at least in April 1918 when he registered his daughter but I am yet to locate a death for him.

Thank you very much.

I have just received a copy of my grandmothers Blanche Mellor birth certificate. She was bon in March 1918 and it appears that her mother, Gertrude Mellor, either died during childbirth or shortly afterwards as when the birth was registered in the following month the mother is listed down as being deceased. I don't know if there is any other information that would be easy to locate as I do wonder what happened to the four young children after this happened with my grandmother being a new born. It really does beggar belief.
