Berkshire Completed Look ups / 1841 Census Abingdon Help Please
« on: Sunday 20 July 08 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've not ventured into this County before, but I believe I may have found a gr gr grandfather of my husbands, William Richard Ostley.  He states on various census in Canada that he was born in England c1838.

I have found a William Richard Ostler born 1838 in Abingdon J/F/M.  I've tried to find him on the 1841 but have had no luck.

When I went though to trawl through all Williams born in Abingdon I couldn't find any in the 1841, no reference to Abingdon at all.

So, my question is, is it available?

He states he came to Canada in 1853.

Thanks for any and all help.

Canada / 1881 Census Help Please - OSTLEY
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 16:41 BST (UK)  »
I have been going round the bend trying to find this family in the 1881 census.

William Ostley married Eliza Ann Drury sometime in Ontario (havn't found that yet).

On the 1901 William says he was born in England, c1838 and came to Canada c1853.

I finally found him on the 1871 Head of Household under William Osler.  They are living in County of York, Township of Whitchurch.

I found a son William Edward born 1870 in Ontario under Horsley.  I also found Mary Maude Ostley, John Franklin Ostley and Amelia Ostley marriages.

I'd really like to find them in the 1881, they should still be in York County.  By 1911 they are living in Newmarket, Ontario.

Can someone please put me out of my misery.

Thanks,
Karen

Canada / Ontario Land Records Workshop
« on: Thursday 22 May 08 22:23 BST (UK)  »
While checking out Global Genealogy's upcoming workshops I seen that Fawne Stratford Devai is doing one on Ontario Land Records.  I've been to hear her speak before and she amazing with her knowledge of the Land Records.

I think I might attend, anyone else interested?

Tracing Your Ontario Ancestors Using LAND RECORDS
Campbellville, Ontario
Workshop Leader: Fawne Stratford-Devai
People did not come to Ontario for the good of their health to chop down trees. They came here in search of new opportunities - the opportunities that land ownership could offer. It stands to reason that some of the earliest and most important records of settlers in the province can be found in land records! Here is your opportunity to learn about both Crown Land Records and Land Registry Office Records in one afternoon!
Morning - Part 1: Ontario Crown Land Records
Crown land records are the records generated about the inhabitants of land while the government owned it. Many thousands of early settlers in the province inhabited crown lands through renting, leasing, squatting, government grants and sales. However, hundreds and even thousands of these early settlers never received the actual patent to the land from the government. Fortunately, records of the initial request for land, or attempts to settle crown land were still generated. In some instances, these records represent the only evidence of a settler's existence in the province before they died or moved on to other areas of Canada or the US.
Afternoon - Part 2: Ontario Land Registry Office Records (Post Patent Land Records)
Land Registry Office records are the records generated once land in Ontario had been granted or sold to an individual from the Government. All transactions after the initial patent is issued are filed in local land registry offices in counties across the province. Land Registry Office records are public documents that span more than two hundred years ~ from 1796 up to yesterday! This session will discuss how to access and use land registry records to learn about the individuals and families who owned property and the rich variety of other records that were also filed in Land Registry Offices.
The workshop is only 35.00 + tax, and includes the workshop registration plus coffee, bottled water and snacks.

« on: Monday 21 April 08 15:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have searched and searched and searched and I still cannot find my gr gr grandmother in the 1901  >:(

I might be trying so hard, that it's right in front of my eyes  ::)  So....

Sophia Bowman born c1833 sometimes she's born in England another time in Ontario.  Her husband is Benjamin Bowman, but I can't find a death for him so I have no idea when he died, altough I do have Sophia living with her daughter and son in lawn in Ingersoll in the 1911 and that is where she died in 1927.

I've no idea where she could be living in the 1901, I can't find my gr grandfather for that matter  :-[ , her son John Wm. Bowman born c1872.  He was born in Fenelon Falls, Ontario, but dies in Guelph, Ontario in 1918.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Karen
