Canada / Prison Sentence for getting caught with Whiskey Still
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 16:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello there,

I have recently found out that my gr gr grandfather came to Canada to visit his daughter.  While he was in Canada apparently, he was caught with a whiskey still and sent to prison  ::)

I have him arriving in 1909 on the Empress of Ireland and then I find him crossing the border at Niagara Falls New York in transit to go home to England in 1918 (with $500.00 in his pocket  :o I don't even have that much money in my pocket when I cross the border  ;D )

His name is William Ball and he was born in Birmingham England in c1855.  His wife is Sarah and she is back in Birmingham the whole time.

I am assuming this would have taken place in Brantford, Ontario as that is where my gr grandmother, Elizabeth Stanley was living.

I havn't been able to find him in the 1911 census.  His daughter goes back to Birmingham for the war and returns to Canada in 1918, so I don't know if he's stayed in Ontario the whole time, was in jail the whole time???

I'm not sure if this was a provincial offence or a federal offence at the time  :-\

Thanks for any help.

The Lighter Side / I'm back from my Trip
« on: Monday 07 April 08 15:10 BST (UK)  »
I have just returned home from my trip to England, Wales and Ireland  :)

First meeting up with Nutty1966 and DapD in Wales was wonderful, only wish it had been longer, but I was on a genealogy adventure and had to go.

I stayed with family and learned so much, stuff that I would have never known.  Just the little things.

I have a fish ashtray that my dad had given me a few years back, he said it was his grandmother's and that she used it all the time.  When I was at my cousins house I was telling them about it and she said started to describe it and I was like "yes, yes", well her father (she's 84 now) made it, and they had the exact one.  He was a brass founder in B'ham.  We got together with her sister in B'ham who is 87 and they just started reminicising while I sat with pen and paper trying to keep up.  Apparently my gr gr grandfather had come to Canada to visit his daughter.  I had no idea  :o  So once I got home I looked on the passenger lists and there he was going to visit his daughter.

They told me lots of other little stories, like my gr gr grandmother polished the pews at St. George's Church on Wheeler St and that she lost her finger when she was 12 years old working as a metal stamper.  She used to also curl her hair with a fire poker.  I also had a picture of a very old lady and written on it was "mother"  I had a feeling who I thought it might be, but of course no proof, I brought the photo with me and they confirmed that it was their grandmother, Nanny Ball.

My next stop was Dublin Ireland and to the records office.  I was like a kid in a candy store going through the index books.  I ended up getting my gr gr grandparents marriage certificate, their death certificates and I even got my gr gr gr grandmother's death certificate, so now I have a further generation back in Ireland.  I also got siblings of my gr gr grandfather's marriage certificiates.

It was a really successful trip and I'm so glad that I went.

I believe this is a wives tale, but, seems to be a true one  :(

Does anyone know if there is a timeline between the first death and the third death?

Did anyone watch the episode tonight with Don Cherry.  Love him or hate him (I love him  ;D) I thought it was a great one.

I was happy that they did an episode on a celebrity that had a Home Child in their tree.  The Vimy Ridge part was interesting too.

World War One / April 6, 1918

Hello there,

I am looking up information on my gr uncle Archie Sweett who was in WWI.  He served with the Canadian Exp. Force either 123rd Battallion or the 125th.

His daughter has told me that he was wounded on April 6, 1918 and I was wondering what was happening that day.

She also mentioned PPCL1 France which I'm not sure what that means.

Thanks for any help.
