Edit: I see that this information has now already been posted.

1901 census for Hampstead:

Susan Roberts - servant - Wid - 50 - domestic cook - Hayle, Cornwall

Seems to be the same Susan as the 1881

Looks as though she stayed in London, and sent her sons to Cornwall to be looked after, as she was no longer with Robert.

Canning Town was right on the borders of Essex and Middlesex, so could easily have been classed as Middlesex.

There's also a marriage - 1915 - Islington

Charles Robert Hovell - 31  marrying Martha Hannah Wilkin

Witnesses:  Sarah Emily Bayliss and William Alfred Bayliss

Thank you lizdb.  It's encouraging to know someone agrees with me  :)

I think this ties in nicely:  Charlotte Hovell aged 21 marrying 1902 in Hoxton.  Witnesses: Charles and Sarah Bayliss

I'm guessing that Minnie and Charlotte were the children of Hovell, but I'm not so sure about Charles Robert.

There's this family in 1881.  Again, not right but sort of close.

Hackney

Robert Hovell - head - 25 - cabinet maker - Suffolk
Tirlot Hovell - wife - 23 - Mx. London (maybe Tirlot is short for Charlotte)
Amelia Hovell - dau - 2 - Mx. London

Possibly just a coincidence, but Minnie Sarah Griffiths registered Jan-Mar 1879 at Hackney has the reference nos. 1b 592

Minnie Sarah Hovell registered Jan-Mar 1879 at Hackney has the same reference numbers.

There's also a Charlotte Hovell registered 1881 in Hackney, and a Robert Charles Hovell registered 1884 in Hackney. (Not quite right, but close)

"Son" Charles Ritchie could be the son of Wallace and Sarah Ritchie baptised 1868 in Hackney.

Wallace Ritchie married a Sarah Foster.  I'm not sure where (if anywhere) she connects to the Mary Ann Foster who married Thomas Rosser.    Mary Ann's father was William - a sweep, and Sarah's father was Oliver - a boot maker.

Yes, I thought I had to have it wrong.   I'd followed the family from the 1901 and 1911 censuses at Dodson Street, mentioned in the opening post.
