For Sale / Wanted / Events / Wanted: lift from York to Lincoln
« on: Monday 09 March 09 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
I want to visit Lincolnshire Archives some time this year; I live in York. Anyone going my way who would like to offer a lift?

Cork / Aghadown: McCarthy

My ancestors appear to hail from Aghadown near Skibbereen. Those born in Ireland, before they moved to London, include Catherine about 1842, Honora about 1848, and Michael about 1851. Their father was John, born about 1814. He married a Jane (possibly Regan) from Dublin. Does anyone know how I can move forward (or, rather, backward) with this family?

I have now cleared this matter up. Thomas and Jane married 23 Dec 1860 in Bermondsey. Jane was in Chelsea in 1851 while Thomas was in Waltham Cross (Jewson Mills) where his father was a silk weaver. Thomas and his parents were in Stoke Newington in 1841; he was born in Hackney in 1838. Jane's was born in Chelsea where her father was a lighterman; several of her siblings and nephews also worked on the river.

Shelly this certainly fits the time frame and most spectacularly the place. A William Askwith from Tattershall is definitely mine! So many thanks to both of you for a most illuminating search. I am amazed how quickly the information can all come together.

Many thanks to both of you again for your suggestions and work on my behalf. I will look at those references tomorrow. Lovely social column. Meanwhile, I would be really interested in the possibility of the 1860 Pennsylvania census giving William's place of birth in England. Is there any way I can get to see the census image - is it free or paid for? Or can you, Shelly, take a look at it? Until then we are working in the dark as to whether this is really my relation...

Shelly thank you. It would have taken me weeks to find all this on the internet. I'm most grateful.

It certainly looks as if John Delaney Askwith, born 1846 died 1930, enlisted in Pennsylvania and served 1863-4, and it's possible he was the son of a William Askwith who immigrated from Lincolnshire. I will check the ancestry message board you mention.

I wonder if you have a reference to the Lincoln Star report, since that may be the obituary notice for the John who died in September 1930?

Once again, many thanks.

« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 22:16 BST (UK)  » you know if I can look up a possible marriage of William and Anna in Pennsylvania? The period could be 1840 to 1844, I guess.

and are there any death indexes for Nebraska from 1885 onwards?

Thank you very much, both. My great great grandmother's father was called William so your findings are certainly of interest. He was a blacksmith.

The family married into the Ely family in Lincolnshire; I don't know if this is relevant to some of the spellings?

What was a moulder?

I have a hand drawn family tree which says that one of my great great grandmother's (un-named) brothers emigrated from Lincolnshire to Nebraska, where he lived with his children. The name is Askwith, sometimes spelt Asquith. My ancestor was born in 1818; I don't know when the brother was born. The family came from around Tattershall in the south of Lincolnshire. If anyone can find any possible details of this family in the Nebraska census I would be really interested. But perhaps there is not enough information here to make a search?
