well this just gets better and better, the poor woman.

Later census results show she moved to Abergavenny to help her father run the family business (china dealer); she later took the business over after he became incapacitated. So she obviously recovered from this mysterious condition, whatever it was.

so... unmarried and unfortunate in 1861 might mean she was a prostitute.

thank you - but if you look further along the line on the 1861 you will still see Unfortunate as her occupation, completely separate from her marital status. What were they inferring?

in 1851 she is living with her parents and family in Stone; all the children are listed by initial only.  (HO107/2000)

the prostitution angle is certainly interesting though.

In the 1861 census I have found this listing:

Elizabeth Shaw (head of family) b 1833 Leominster, Herefordshire – married, occupation Unfortunate

William, son (b 1854 Longton Staff)

Emma J, daughter (b 1858 Longton Staff)

I take this to mean she was either an unwed mother, or indigent/pauper. Are either of these guesses accurate, or is there another meaning for Unfortunate?

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Filer family - Sudbury, Suffolk
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 19:13 BST (UK)  »
hello -
unfortunately I don't know much about Samuel either, other than he is my gggrandfather via his daughter Rose, or Rosina, who married James Matten.

The only other info I have been able to find is his possible second marriage to a Maria Richold, in Sudbury in 1862. He and Maria appear in the 1881 census, living in London. Sam was by then working as a carpenter.

My interest in Samuel, as well as fitting him into the family tree, has to do with his supposed partnership with Sam Courtaulds who founded the great Courtaulds textiles firm.

Does any of this help?
Bonnie

hi KPM -
I am trying to find out more about a Samuel Francis Filer, b 1823, Sudbury Suffolk. He was also involved in textiles for a time.

I think he was m twice, and had at least one daughter, Rose, b 1851, also in Sudbury (my gggrandmother).

According to family legend his was a rather sad story, and I'd like to verify it. Does he appear in your tree?

thanks,
Bonnie
