Ireland / Which name is correct
« on: Friday 08 March 19 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am sure versions of this question have been asked before on RoosChat but I cannot find anything. South Dublin Workhouse records confirm that Bridget Byrne the second daughter of Ellen Byrne was born there on 23rd August 1880. Her elder sister Mary was born at the same workhouse in 1879 and younger sister Anne in the same place in 1882 with both births registered by the workhouse officer in the Rathdown District.
I can only assume that the workhouse officer had a few drams of the amber nectar before he registered the birth of Bridget because first it was registered in South Dublin and then he used mother Ellen's maiden name (Ward) as the family name and made Byrne the mother’s maiden name so we ended up with John Ward instead of John Byrne as the father and Ellen Byrne instead of Ellen Ward, all other details including the date of birth and the father residing at Naas are correct.
My question therefore is which name is correct by law, she is recorded as Bridget Byrne in the 1901 census and on her marriage certificate but as Bridget Ward on her birth certificate, does this in theory make her marriage wrong or is it just viewed as a genuine mistake.

Europe / Re: Malta relatives
« on: Wednesday 23 January 19 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya, it’s good to know that I am not the only person struggling to get information on Maltese relatives, sadly though it seems there is no family link between our searches. There is another French based website that I have been using, it is part free and part subscription and carries some good information https://en.geneanet.org/ if you have not used it already it might well be worth a try. As for posting your tree on Rootschat I don’t think that is allowed, it really is a site just for helping and sharing information and ideas on all things genealogical with a few amusing sidelines thrown in.

I am sure somebody will prove me wrong but I don’t think that there are any “official” sites or places for Maltese research, you must remember that government BMD records did not start until the early 1800s and prior to that all records were (and still are) held by the relevant parish church. If you can find the right church some of them are extremely helpful but again you must remember that the people dealing with your mail are volunteer churchgoers and therefore things that are not important to them may well get put to one side.
One possible way forward is if you put Malta into the Rootschat search engine and then go through the displayed list you will be able to pick up a lot of websites and addresses that other researchers have used over the years that could come in very handy.
There are a couple of websites I found this way that I am using just now https://www.maltagenealogy.com/ has some really serious listings by family name that need a lot of careful studying and then there is http://en.geneanum.com/malta/databases.html a French based website which is a work in progress that I have found to be really good and so far very accurate.
Also there is https://en.geneanet.org/ which is another French based website that has a lot of links with Maltese research sadly though a lot of the trees shown on the site have no source reference for their information so you need to be careful.
Hope this is some help, good hunting - GedB

The site referenced here has some information on the Royal Navy in Malta up until 1970 hope it is of some use, you just need to click through the indexes -link removed - GedB

I am sorry but the link has had to be removed as the website has been taken over by a "adult website"  :o

Australia / Re: Australian Marriage certificate

The lists mentioned in the first two replies are superb and I have referred to them on many occasions but remember it does say what you can “expect” on a certificate not what you will get, I recently ordered an 1844 marriage certificate from Western Australia and it contained only the two names, their declared ages and the occupation of the groom, so please don’t expect all the listed details - GedB

Benjamin Richardson a widower aged 21+ of Bath Somerset married Sarah Babington a spinster aged 21+ of Pansbury Shropshire in Malta on 19th June 1828. The 2nd Battalion were there at this time so the birth of Mary Richardson in 1830 could be linked. - GedB

There is a Mary Richardson born 1830 in Malta, her father was in the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, although further information is pretty thin on the ground - GedB

Good morning, I have hopefully attached a link to the official site below, although they ask for both parents names I have found in the past that they are extremely helpful and if you can give one parents name and the date of birth plus a quick note that explaining the situation they will go ahead with the application.

If it is a military birth the site below contains a lot of details and is worth a look
