Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Croydon Directory 1920s look up request

Bit late to get your money back for a dodgy filling, but here goes from Wards 1924 Directory:

H Crofton - 36 North End
Herbert D Finn - 83 Brigstock Road
Harold Fox - 65 Waddon Road
H N Purdom - 75 Park Lane

I assume these are dental premises.  I checked actual residences and Herbert D Finn and H Neish Purdom lived above the shop, so to speak (ie private residence was same address).  Couldn't find private addresses for the other two.

Have you tried Telephone Directories?

A William Moens esq was living at Ivy Cottage, Selsdon Road, South Croydon - 1867 PO Directory - just down the road from Archbishop Tenison's school.  No occupation recorded for this William,

If Milbrook is close to "Southampton, Holy Rood" there is a good chance that this Joseph Iles you found is my ancestor.
 :D
Glennis
Millbrook, Southampton, is to the west of Southampton City Centre, and Holyrood Church is in the City Centre.

Open Google maps uk - http://maps.google.co.uk/

Enter: "Millbrook, Southampton SO15, United Kingdom" in the search box

You will see A33 Millbrook Road/Mountbatten Way going east-south-east toward Southampton City Centre

Enter: "Holyrood Church, High Street, Southampton SO14" in the search box

This will show the City Centre at the other end of A33 Mountbatten Way/West Quay Road

Marlborough is about 40 Miles north as the crow flies from Southampton.  Southampton is the nearest coast to Marlborough, so if anyone in Marlborough planned to go to sea that's where they would probably go to (Bristol is a bit further - about 50 miles to the west of Marlborough)

What date is the "Thirty sixth year of the Reign of George Third"????

George 3rd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_George_3 was king from 1760 to 1820.  So the thirty sixth year of his reign would be 1795/1796.

Just got in after two days away with work, but will look later to see if I can work out where Thomas and Frances Iles came from

It's a nightmare when you don't have a substantive clue, isn't it?

Have you ruled out the Joseph Iles born to Thomas and Frances, and baptised on 26 December 1771 at Southampton Holy Rood?

A Joseph Eyles (son of James) was buried at Collingbourne Kingston 3 December 1794.  There's no further info provided in the transcript (indeed we're lucky here that at least it says he is son of James).

In terms of the further info you are after, can you be a bit more specific - eg do you want to know about siblings of Joseph or grandparents? [Can't say I can magic this up, but helps to know if I'm looking for what you want :)]

I cannot find a Sainsbury baptism or burial in Newton Tony pre-1837.  Can't vouch for Winterslow though

James' baptism has been transcribed as James Thustain Annetts 7 September 1783, Vernham Dean (born 2 August)

Charles Annetts and Mary Thustain married 18 August 1783  Vernham Dean.

Vernham Dean is less than 10 miles east of the Collingbournes, but in Hampshire not Wiltshire.

I hope this is helpful

Your information is of great interest to me as I have never been to CD.

Neither have I, Martin  :D

Sadly, I couldn't find anything more on these names - I assume because Sarah Ann moved away (eventually to Warminster via Westminster and a brief return to CK?)

Do you have the baptism of James Tristian Annetts in Vernham Dean, Hampshire?

And finally, there's references to Annetts' in the book "Collingbourne Remembered - a village history", which is a coffee table book version of research one of the villagers (Pamela Cogdell) undertook .

Court Roll of the Manor of CD: Copyholders included Edward Annetts - the date 26 October 1695 is recorded (which I assume is the date from which the copyhold applied; other dates against names range from 1684 to 1734)

In 1845 James Annetts had a substantial allotment behind the cottages on the Ludgershall Road; Stephen Annetts had a cottage and garden on that same road.

Extracts from the title deeds for the Savernake Forest estate show :

26/3/1731  William Annetts of Collingbourne Sunton, husbandman

20/3/1732 John Annetts, of Collingbourne Sunton, husbandman

20/3/1732 Elizabeth Annetts of Collingbourne Sunton

The book has quite a bit of info from Cora Annetts (descended from George the tailor, I believe) and Reg Annetts who died in 1992.  The book also has the will of Edward Annatts, Yeoman of CD dated 7 September 1728, and an item on the old forge where James Annetts lived and worked in 1843.

(I assume you have access to the pre-1837 baptisms and burials in CD and CK?  For example that Charles Annetts was baptised in CD on 12 December 1813, son of James Tristian Annetts, blacksmith, and Ann Reeves?)

Hope all this is helpful
