Other Countries / INDIA/CEYLON - Kenneth John
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 07:59 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more information on my grandfather's uncle, Kenneth John.  I have family records stating that after WW1 he was posted to Queen victoria's Own Poona Horse Guard.  Does anyone know if there is a way to find any records of those who served in this regiment.  I do know that he was a Commanding Officer when he retired.  I am guessing that he was born in the 1890s.  Although his parents were based in Ceylon , his mother seemed to return to Portobello, Scotland to give birth to his sister, Doris, in 1894.  I have no records of his birth through family records so I do not know if he was born in Ceylon or Scotland as well.  I thought that possible a way to find out more about him would be to go the Horse Guard route.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
Is there anyone out there who could possible help me find the connection betweent the Coopers of Markree Castle in Collooney, Co. Sligo, Ireland and the Wynnes.  Cooper was taken on as a second name so I am assuming that a male Wynne married a female Cooper.  I have looked up Markree Castle on the internet and got the early Coopers, but there my trail runs cold.

Any help would be appreciated.

Shannon

South Africa / Re: SA Help needed

Hi,

I live in Cape Town in South Africa, and believe me when I say S.A. research is quite difficult as we are still rather backward here and very little info is available to the public.  May I suggest going to www.familytree.co.za and getting a researcher to help you.  They are fantastic and with the info you have they could probably help you aquire more information.
Good Luck,
Shannon

HI Kate,

I have done searches till I'm blue in the face with not much outcome.  To be honest, I'm stumped.  Luckily we have someone here in South Africa researching my mother's direct line - father, grandfather etc.  As for the connection to the Wynnes of Sligo - not a thing.  I do believe it is going to be a very slow process....
Any luck your side?

There must be a connection because it is an unusual name - probably originally a surname.  Bancroft Stewart died a bachelor and appeared to be an inmate for a while :o shock shock horror....according to family records he was a strange little man - guess that says it all.

I wonder what the connection is though between Bancroft Stringer and the other Stringers I have, viz, Ann and William as he is about 40 years younger than Ann - maybe a nephew...

This is all proving very confusing...it seems as though there is much inbreeding if the head of the household has the same surname as his brother-in-law:

{John Stringer, head, 51, Bricklayer Journeyman, Liverpool
Mary, wife, 49, Liverpool
Jane Wrighton, dau, 26, Dress Maker
Mary Theresa, dau, 12, Scholar, Liverpool
William, son, 14, Foundry Boy, Liverpool
Hiram, son, 9, School, Liverpool
William Stringer, brother in law, 48, Bricklayer ( Master ), Liverpool
Jane Cooper, boarder, mar, 48, Plum Server, Liverpool
Sarah Jane Cooper, boarder, dau, 19, Plum server, London Middlesex
Jacob Cooper, son, 10, Scholar, London Battersea}

I do not recognise any of the other names and the William Stringer I have is Ann Stewart's (née Stringer) father.

Where can I find the census listings from pre 1861 as ancestry.co.uk has them only from 1861?

I suppose that the head, John Stringer, could be a cousin of Ann Stewart's (née Stringer).  There are so many missing links.  I cannot understand why the Stringers are so difficult to track - maybe they moved around a lot.

Thanks for all your trouble.
Regards,
Shannon

I am wondering if the William Stringer listed as visitor is Anne Stewart's (née Stringer) brother as he is too young to be her son.  One of her sons is William Stringer Stewart - my great great grandfather, but he spent a large part of his life in Bombay with the British East India company.

It is all rather perplexing and I am finding it so hard to find out anything about the Stringers.....

Thanks so much for your help.
Let's hope something else pops out of the woodwork.

Hi Darcy, thanks for all your help.
I have a list of the children Joseph and Ann (Nancy) stringer had and there is no daughter called Nancy listed.  The children I have are:
mary
William
Ann
Joseph
Anne
Elizabeth
Robert
Bancroft
Ann - again

Do any of these names co-incide?

Regards,
Shannon
