Sussex Lookup Requests / William Dolling (Dowling) marriage to Frances (Fanny) Wares
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 14:55 BST (UK)  »
From Find My Past (and FamilySearch) I have found the following marriage of William Doling to Frances Wares, 8 Nov 1808 in Mid Lavant, Sussex, Eng (England Marriages 1538-1973) (no image available).   I have found a 1851 census HO107/1652, of a William Dowling 68, Farm Labourer born Kings Sombourne, Hampshire and Fanny 64, born E Lavant in Sussex, living in Mid Lavant which is the area of the descendants I am researching came from.   The nearest birth record for William Dolling (Dowling) I can find is a 13 Jul 1783, Baptism record at Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire.  Looking up both areas I note they are only 8.6 miles apart but fall in different poor union areas.  The father and mother for this William is Moses Dowling and Ann (nee Bennett).  I am trying to establish that this William is the one and same.  Has anyone got access to the Sussex Marriage Parish Records to confirm the father details, abode and witnesses of the bride and groom which might help to confirm one way or another?  Many thanks in advance.

Hi Guys
Find My Past does NOW have a copy of the Parish Record.  It just goes to show it pays to recheck records regularly.

Yes I have a subscription with Find My Past but this parish record is not one that has an image - only transcription.  To confirm other family trees had the right marriage I needed more information than the transcription gives i.e. witness names, occupations, father names and occupations.  I am happy that it is the right record but like a copy for my own records.

Thanks to Roots Chat (Cidardrinker) I have been able to confirm a marriage in St Marys, Portsea.  I would now like to obtain either an electronic or hard copy of the event.  I have been on the Hampshire Archive website but can't see anywhere to request copies or even leave a query.  Can anyone help me as I do not live local to this area.  Many thanks.

Thank you Pauline.  Feeling a bit stupid now!  Thank you Ciderdrinker, it looks as if it is the right marriage.  Thank you for your help.

I can confirm that Family Search cites St Mary's as Parish of Portsea.  This, however, does not confirm this is the right marriage.  Ciderdrinker can you confirm the details you have posted?
Charlotte Boxall spinster Jubilee? d of John Carpenter
What is Jubilee - is this the address?
If daughter of John Carpenter - why the different surname?  It doesn't make sense to me.
Who are Caroline Boxall and Henry Boxall (siblings perhaps?) if John and Elizabeth are parents
I think I am more confused than ever!

I am looking for the marriage parish record between a William Dowling and Charlotte Boxall(?) in 1837.  I believe that William Dowling (Dolling) was born in 1811 in Mid Lavant, although the 1841 census HO107/1104/7/3/Pg1 cites him born in 1816 in Sussex.  His wife Charlotte in the 1841 census is 25, so again her birth year is approximately 1816.  In the 1851 census (HO107/1652), Charlotte is a widow living at New Buildings, East Lavant, Westhampnett, Sussex with sons William 12, Edmund 10, John 8 and Elin 4.  Charlotte is cited to have been born in Singleton (1814), Sussex - which is roughly only 2-3 miles from East Lavant.  I can find no marriage on Family Search for a William Dowling (or variation) to a Charlotte in Sussex.  Other trees on Ancestry have quoted Charlotte's maiden name as Boxall together with a marriage in Portsea, Hampshire to a William Dowling on 13 Nov 1837.  Why would they have married in another county?  Is this the right William and Charlotte?  Any information on the Parish Marriage Record as quoted would be very much appreciated.  :)  Many thanks for any help.
