thanks clearly, this means a lot to me.

Below is a copy of the marriage record from Nichol Forest, if its helps.

Indeed, Joseph was five and a half years old at the time of his baptism, this was the link that established him to thomas steel. There are two possible fathers for thomas, george of kirklington and john of stapleton.

Hello

Thomas and Eleanor had four children as far as I am aware between marriage and Joseph

These were: John Steel 1779 Stapleton
James Steel 1789 - 1872 Stapleton
Hannah Steel: 1792 Stapleton

Cumberland / finding the father of Thomas Steel

Hello,

my name is Sirsimon, I am new to this place.

I have been researching my family for four years now. My family were the Steels of Cumberland.
However, I have come to a standstill, since I am having a problem  :-\

My 4x great grandfather was named Joseph Steel, he was born in 1797 to parents Thomas Steel and Eleanor Turnbal (Turnbull). Joseph, along with his sister Hannah was baptised at Stapleton parish church on 23rd January 1803.

Now I did some research into his father Thomas. He married Eleanor Turnbal at Nichol Forest Cumberland on the 27th June 1776.

The record says he was born in 1750 and was aged 26 years of age at the time.

However, I cannot find his father. It is possible he was baptised on 10th April 1749 at Stapleton, his father being mentioned as John Steel.

This is likely to be the father of Thomas, however I cannot link them together, since the marriage certificate does not reveal a month of birth, and because the birth and marriage occured between 1754, when the Julian calendar became the Gregorian calendar, it is possible the details on the marriage record are incorrect by a year earlier or later than reality.

If anyone can confirm that this Thomas Steel, born in 1749 is the Thomas on the marriage certificate of 1776, marrying Eleanor Turnbal, I would be eternally grateful and perhaps I could help those whom have steel lineage in cumberland.

my warmest thanks in the matter

Sirsimon :)

Hello

my name is Sirsimon, this is my first post.

Stapleton is a small village boardered by the parishes of Nichol Forest and Dalston in Cumberland. The church there is St Mary's church, its records date back to mid 1600s if memory serves right.

Four successive generations of my family were baptised and lived in Stapleton
