Does anyone know how often these updates happen?

Is it randomly every few months or once a year?

Scotland / Re: Sept of Clan Gordon confusion

thank you for replying

Yes I agree, there are a lot of fantasies and falsehoods surrounding the clan system of Scotland. I don't think my family was a proper clan, a small sept is more likely

My family wasn't a reiver border clan because they are not listed as such, however they did marry into some large families such as the Routledges.

Their absence could be explained in that they didn't originate in Cumbria and it is more likely they fled the border south

Most of the clan maps have Clan Gordon being located in the south west, a branch clan from the ones in Aberdeenshire

Scotland / Sept of Clan Gordon confusion
« on: Monday 21 September 20 14:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My family were the Steele/Steel family who lived in Stapleton in Cumberland on the English/Scottish border.

After a recent ancestry dna test, it stated I had 35% scottish blood.

Now after studying my tree, the only line this could come from is from the Steele family.

I have a theory that the Steeles were from Dumfriesshire and moved south into Cumberland for some unknown reason.

I believe the Steeles were septs of Clan Gordon.

However I am a little confused, I have read three books on scottish clans and septs and none of them list the Steeles as a sept, however a few websites online do.

Is there a reason why the publications do not mention my family, but websites do?

Sorry if it sounds dumb, but it's confusing me

my thanks

Cumberland / Re: Border Reivers clan names

thank you everyone for the replies.

I think I might have figured it out.

I took an ancestry dna test and it came back, after some updates of the database that I am 35% scottish.

Now I have checked all my ancestral lineages and none of them originate from Scotland, mostly from the Midlands and Cornwall.

The fact that the name Steele does not appear in the Border Clans list is because they weren't border clans.

I think the Steele family originally came from Dumfriesshire as a sept family of Clan Gordon and moved south over the border, possible to escape war or persecution.

Only thing that puzzles me is that I have read two books on scottish clans and none of them list Steel as a sept of Clan Gordon, but all the datebases and online websites do

I was 83% english and 17% irish

Now I am 59% english, 6% irish and 35% scottish

Very surprised about the scottish part, but it gives evidence to my theory that my family the Steeles were from the lowlands in dumfrieshire

thanks for replying guys

I had my test results from ancestry and it was a nightmare to get them back since these results are from a second sample I had to send another sample since they failed to retrieve any usable dna from the first sample.

Perhaps I will just have to wait until the databases get more accurate. To be honest I am not displeased with the result as it aligns with 11 years of research, just find it all confusing

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Dna result - No Viking
« on: Sunday 03 May 20 19:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I recently got my dna test results. It came back 83% england/wales/nw europe and 17% ireland/scottish

These results are not surprising and line up with my research

What surprised and disappointed me a little was that there was 0% scandanavian or germanic dna

According to the results i dont have any viking or saxon ancestry or any blood from outside Britain

My question is: is this rare or unusual? I thought nearly every briton had some norse blood of some kind

Most of my closest dna matches have some scandanavian origin, so why dont I?

My thanks i am new to dna testing
