Married men were exempt from conscription until June 1916. Richards brother Walter died July 1916 then James September 1916 serving their country then his son James was born October 1916. He could have applied for exemption from conscription on these grounds to his local military services tribunal. Another reason he wasn't conscripted is he could have been in a reserved occupation or only able to do light work such as Heywood mentions as a clerk.
As for the trips to Ireland three of Richards Grandparents originated for Ireland so perhaps he was visiting family.

The very same thing happened to me last week & I kept getting messages to say the person had not received the invite after 3 times using their username I tried the e-mail & it worked straight away. I was really embarrassed by this & thought it was my fault.

World War Two / Re: WW2 Burma Soldier Help

I sent for both my parents Military records from WW2 & was quite disappointed there wasn't that much personal information, just where they were stationed, dates of arrival & departure & rank or promotions & medals awarded. My father was in hospital for ten days while serving in Burma which it did mention, but a lot of it is was abbreviated. A very kind member of our forum Max deciphered it all for me, otherwise I wouldn't have understood hardly any of it.
