Australia / Connolly from Cork to Queensland 1850s/60s
« on: Monday 06 March 06 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any information about my Connolly ancestors. Brothers Dennis and Timothy Connolly emigrated from Co Cork in 1852 and 1867 respectively.
Denis was married to Johanna Callaghan (or O'Callaghan) from Crookstown, Cork, in Australia.  Her father was James and her mother Catherine Taylor.
Timothy married Catherine McCarthy in Bantry, Ireland before they emigrated with 5 children.

Denns lived at Skibbereen in Cork before emigrating, but his parents were Timothy Connolly and Catherine Collins who married at Ballydehob in West Cork in 1828.

In Australia they lived in Queensland.  Timothy lived at Warwick and was at sometime the local mayor.  Dennis also lived at Warwick before moving to Elphinstone in the Clifton District.

Other siblings left in Ireland: Daniel (b 1829), Jeremiah (b1831), Mary (b1833), John (b1836), Patrick (b1844).

Would welcome any information about their lives in Australia or about the siblings in Ireland about which I know nothing.

« on: Monday 06 March 06 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any connections to my GG Grandfather who was born about 1833 in Cornwall, England.  Don't know what date he emigrated.  He was married to Catherine Rofe (nee Johnson) also apparently from Cornwall in 1866. Only child I know of was Catherine Charlotte born May 1867.  He was a carpenter and later became a building contractor.  Lived at Redbank, Victoria.  Looking for any other descendants or siblings etc.

Cork / Re: St. Leger Family
« on: Wednesday 01 March 06 12:23 GMT (UK)  »
I also have St Leger ancestors -  I am descended from Sir William's daughter Elizabeth who married Murchadh O'Brien, Earl of Inchiquin.  I wondered if you had any information about Sir William's wife Gertrude de Vries or his mother Elizabeth Roth.

Best wishes

My branch of the Irish McKechnie's set up a laundry business in Cork, it is still going as a contract cleaning business. Here are some names - Robert McKechnie born abt 1890, died 1937. Father John McKechnie (born Glasgow?), mother Anges Swan (born Abt 1870, Edinburgh?). Robert married Amy Clayton (c1890-c1955). Any further info about this branch most welcome..

Ireland / Re: Battle of the Boyne & aftermath

Found answer to my own question.  Book written in  1693 and entitled "Story's Wars in Ireland" also "An Impartial account of William's Wars in Ireland", by Dean George Story who was a Chaplain in William's Army and was in London when the army was being recruited.   Just searched British Library Catalogue and they have it there, apparently a copy is also at the Linen Hall in Belfast.

Ireland / Battle of the Boyne & aftermath
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
One of my distant ancestors is reputed to have come to Ireland with William of Orange's army and been a "commander" at the Battle of the Boyne.  He was reputedly then granted some land in Co Cavan as a "reward".  I can find nothing about him in relation to either.  Can anyone tell me whether there is any research or contemporary sources that might give the names of participants in the Battle.  I think he was originally from France and unlikely to have been in an English Regiment.  I also wondered whether the story about the land is credible.  I know that large estates were doled out to various members of the establishment but did they partition it? or was there some arrangement whereby less important people were given land?

The Common Room / Family Emblem or Crest
« on: Saturday 14 January 06 13:02 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me whether there is a  directory of family emblems that have been registered in the UK? The family crest I am interested in was invented by my ancestor about 120 -100 years ago.  It must have appeared in a directory at some point because an unrelated person in another country with the same surname picked it up.  The family origin is Scottish but the person resided in England.  The crest must be quite obscure now because it doesn't turn up on the "get the wall-plaque, mug and t-shirt.." websites.

Down / Re: Searight/Seawright
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for your information.
The Searights I am interested in are from the Newry/Down area,  I know that they must have been there for some time as the name is around for a few generations but I don't know how they are related.  My ancestor is on the latter day saints site but her "parents" would be in their 50's or 60's when she was born so it seems that someone has just cobbled together all the Searight names in the area and tried to relate them.  I know she also had some connection with Liverpool merchants Beath and William Searight as they put up the bond for her daughter to go to India.  All her daughters seem to have married officers in the Indian army/East India company or people connected with India in some way.
For obvious reasons I think it is likely they originated from a planter family, again by inference from Scotland.  I think there might be more than one origin of the name and I think some other websites (rootsweb?) discuss the name origin in some detail and have a lot of information on the US Searights/Seawrights,as well as the book you refer to.

Down / Searight/Seawright
« on: Sunday 19 June 05 13:59 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone else got any Searight ancestors in the Newry area?  I am looking for family of Charlotte Searight (married to Lawford Tronson) who lived 1792 - 1869.  She is buried in St Patricks C of I Graveyard, Newry.  I have found references to other Searights/Seawrights on the Ros Davies site and other online resources but I don't know how if at all they are related.  I would be very interested to hear from anyone researching the Searight/Seawright  name.
