Could this be her in 1910, "Gridale"?
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MLTP-YRL

Well it probably is because I know of no other Grace Grisdale born in 1895 anywhere let alone in Michigan. Thanks. The mystery deepens! So if this is her in an asylum she got discharged and went to live with her rich grand uncle James in Kitsap then eloped and suffered in a ship wreck ....

US Lookup Requests / A Seattle Mystery

I’m trying to find more references to Dolores Grace Grisdale (often called Grace) who was born in 1895 in Bay City Michigan but after the divorce of her parents no doubt went to live with relatives (as did her siblings). However, I can’t find her in either in the 1900 or the 1910 census. In 1911 she was living with her grand uncle James in Kitsap/Seattle as you will see from this story:

http://grisdalefamily.wordpress.com/2013/09/20/grace-grisdale/

Next I’m trying to find her after about 1920. On 7th Sept 1920 she married Richard Edward Cantwell in Tacoma, Washington. I believe he was an epileptic from Charleston S. C., where he died in hospital in 1941. The problems start because in the 1920 census we find a married Grace Cantwell in Tacoma of about the right age, a hotel servant. Unlike the others on the census all that is given is that she and her parents were born in the United States!? But I believe that the census was taken before her marriage in September 1920, so is it her?

Then we find in city directories for Tacoma in 1920 a Mrs Grace Cantwell (a nurse) living in the same house as Jos(eph) R Cantwell (Grace) (US Army). In the 1921 Tacoma directory we find Jos R Cantwell a cook with a wife Dolores G! Is this all a coincidence? The only Joseph R Cantwell I could find who matches at all in one born in Illinois in 1895 (Joseph Raymond Cantwell) who joined the army in 1917 and supposedly died in France in 1918? I can’t figure it out.

Then there is a directory entry for a Dolores G Cantwell in San Diego in 1928, but that might not be her although she was a ‘waiter’ which might fit with ‘servant in a hotel’.

What became of Grace and where was she in 1900 and 1910? Can anybody help?

US Lookup Requests / Re: William Grisdale Illinois Civil War Soldier

I noticed that William R. filed for his invalid pension from Indiana, but Anna filed from Illinois.

I found some articles from Indiana that referred to some violent outbreaks at mines.

Rochester Independent, 4 May 1878:  in a story about court case at Covington, Indiana involving a feud between union and non-union miners, it says that the prosecution accused various men of murder, including that William Grisdale killed Thomas Cooper.  It looks like William was released on bail, despite the judge believing or finding that he was guilty.

Sullivan Democrat, 19 Jun. 1878 - it says there were troubles at the Coal Creek mine near Covington between the "white and colored miners".  There is a reference to "old Billy Grysdale" attempting to seek shelter and receiving a wound in the left leg that was not serious.

Logansport Pharos, 20 Jun. 1878 - in Covington, a warrant was issued against over 30 people for the shooting of William Grysdale.  It refers to 6 other white men being arrested for the killing of John Miles and Thomas Cooper and noted that they were 6 of the 14 who were acquitted last quarter of the killing of Phillip Cozzens.

That's a great discovery. Thanks. Any chance of getting the articles? Now we need to find who he was and why he's not in the censuses?

Stephen

Shelley Is there any way I could get these articles?

I also wonder if we can find John's father's James' death in Gaston NC, when his wife Annie Cannon died there in 1923 she was said to be a widow.

Also Annie (James Grisdale's wife) gave her birth as Delaware on the censuses but Canada on her death. Her parents Tom and Sarah Cannon were said to have been born in PA. ??

There is a Thomas Grisdale who died in Norristown in 1931, but that appears to be the only Grisdale who died in Pennsylvania in 1931.  http://www.health.state.pa.us/indices/indices%20-%20death/1931%20Death/D-31%20G-G.pdf

Regarding obituaries, you can try to look to see if any local newspaper is available online.  Sometimes, local libraries or historical societies will do look-ups.  Occasionally, there will be online lists of volunteers who will do look-ups.

Yes Thomas was the son of James' Uncle Jonathan Grisdale. I'll find the church entry.

John Grisdale was admitted to the  United Church of Christ in Norristown on 17 Apr 1908 and 'erased' on 29 Dec 1931.

Do you have obituaries for any of these people?

Well only for much later ones. How can one find earlier obituaries in these states?

I think I've found a hint of his death in 1931 in Norristown because he was it seems 'removed' from the church register there in that year.

There seem to be quite a few Grisdales in the Norristown area.  There are some John Grisdales in later city directories, but I'm not sure if they're him.

It might be worth pursuing John's other relatives, to see if something like an obituary might mention where he was living.  Looks like some siblings and his mother died in North Carolina:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0w4v/

Yes I know all the other family members in Norristown and North Carolina; it's just John I can't find more on!
