Travelling People / Ward family Ireland
« on: Saturday 11 April 20 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi my maternal grandmother was a Ward. Kathleen Ward may have been born 1905 - states she's 23 on marriage certificate Wexford  1931 to Charles Power traveller ? Not sure but later says he's a tinsmith, birth of his daughter Kathleen dealer. Later he's a known horse dealer.
All takes place in Southern Ireland.
Been told Wards were big traveller family in S. Ireland- suggestions that Wards associated with Mount Bellion, Taylor or Tuam.
If anyone is part of any of these family groups and could help, l would appreciate the imput. Kind thoughts Kat

Hi everyone,
Just an update to My original question. I have found that Kathleen must have been telling porkies.
As she was married to someone else and from a young age, it's possible she wanted to be married to John Rooney but definitely wasn't.
Many thanks to all who read my post. Your a brilliant group of people here at Rootchat 😊

Wexford / Re: Did Kathleen marry?

Hi everyone,
I found Kathleen did marry - got info from original church records. As had been mentioned she would have needed the freedom to marry in another church. The church she married in was Gorey when l visited the area l when into the church and lit a candle for her 😁

 Hi there
Just seen ur post,  now l can tell u the gipsy/traveller people are so secretive. My mother died never having a birth certificate. How can anyone do research when the paper trail doesn't exist. All these fanciful comments of electoral list showing em living in a tent/field doesn't always come to light. Most of my research has come from the kindness of helpful folk. Yes there are records of marriage and births but then it's where to go from there.
Anyway that's my negative slant on a search that has taken 25yrs. But hay hoe onwards & upwards its still gr8 to search. Good Luck with yours

My grandmother was a Ward and she has proved difficult to find on a paper trail. She married a Power which isn't a traveller name and he was ok to find.
I get the impression that travellers arnt that fussed about documention. But oh how difficult when trying to build a family tree no birth certificate. How hum one day maybe. ☺

Hi there dathai
I do appreciate your searches on my behalf.
I note that you have Esther Keilty maiden name Boyce- l have it as Bryce?
I have download the cemetery pdf but unfortunately l can't enlarge on my tablet not having access to a print at the moment l can not see the tables. I can see some yellow highlights do l assume these are the addresses l need to look at ?

I have read the comments posted and can understand their frustation. When l did my DNA l was so excited the possibility of finding distant relatives and a very long shot of finding my brother.
When l had a match of 1st cousin twice removed 189.3 cM
With 10 shared segments l contacted via e-mail twice in the first week no reply, thinking this person maybe on holiday. Now  three weeks no reply - such a shame 😢
