Australia Lookups completed / Mortgage lending in the 1920’s and 1930’s
« on: Sunday 19 May 13 02:26 BST (UK) »My Grandfather was a machine miner in Cessnock NSW. He was also supporting himself and eight other dependents at that time. I found records showing, he and his wife, had lent money out on Mortgage, to 15 people during 1920s and 1930s. He and his wife also owned 6 properties in Cessnock NSW. Any explanations as to how a machine miner could afford to do this?
When looking at NSW Land Title certificates during the period 1920s to 1930s I noticed a lot of Mortgage entries on the back of the NSW Cert of Title from one person lending money to another person, with very few lenders being a bank or building society. Does anyone know how his came about?
Interestingly, both husband and wife were buried in unmarked graves in Catholic cemeteries, leaving over 2000 pounds in their estates.
Looking forward to some feedback.
cheers
