Australia / Re: Lewis Family Ipswich, Moreton Bay NSW
« on: Sunday 11 April 10 02:05 BST (UK)  »
Follow Up - I have received the death and birth details of David Lewis and the female child born unnamed. These details have given me more information to look at the Separation records to locate the widow Anne Lewis.

The death Certificate gives the widow's name as Ann Jarvis - Should be Davies - It was pointed out to me that this was a Scottish settlement basically- the witness was a John Balfour, Brisbane River. If a Welsh speaking person, and a Scottish person interpreting Davies could sound like Jarvis. David Lewis had been in Australia for five months before his death 22 Jan 1856. Unknown burial.

The details of the female child are correct, and Ann is now Davis.  Place of birth Cointon Station, NR Ipswich. Again John Balfour Settler, Cointon NR Ipswich is the informant, Ann Lewis marked with a X.

I have googled John Balfour come up with a few details. This will give me a lead on where to look for this family.

There were obviously some Welsh around this area as Anne remarried John Owen born Wales 1860. Anne did not speak English, or very little. How daunting, no other family members are known. They were Baptists, and David Lewis coming from a line of Welsh Baptist Preachers - maybe the reason for migrating?

I'll keep you posted on any findings for those who may be interested.
Thank you all again for your guidance and help.
Regards
Jane

Thank you Gazania,

I did not know about the pre-seperation index, thank you for pointing it out. I will use the link you provided and have a good read. I'll check if the book format or fiche are held in our State Library in WA.

The death location Colinton Ipswich Moreton Bay New South Wales - has had me really confused! Queensland or NSW?
Many thanks, I shall also Google.

Hello Aniph,
Ann(e)'s parents were Howell Davies & Margaret.

I also noted the marriage to John Owen, and his possible death in 1908 aged 78 yrs born Wales.
There is also a Ann Owen died 1895 no further details are given.

I will possibly order the transcription of marriage and fingers crossed it is right.
Thank you
Jane

Australia / LEWIS Family Ipswich, Moreton Bay NSW
« on: Friday 19 March 10 04:37 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not having much luck on finding this family.
David Lewis stone mason born abt 1830 Pembrokeshire Wales, migrated with wife Anne Nee Davies born abt 1829 Breconshire  - assisted passage "Persia" arrived June 26th 1856

David Lewis death is remembered on his parents MI back in Wales - Died 17 Jan 1857 Colinton Ipswich Moreton Bay New South Wales. ( No death details in Newspapers) NSW deaths confirm these details in the indexes - they also show a Female child born 1857 ( No first name given). I have checked for deaths of a child surname Lewis and also for the widow Anne Lewis to no avail. Did Ann(e) remarry? The Lewis family were Welsh Baptists.

A cousin of David Lewis named Elizabeth Lewis born abt 1843 Pembrokeshire also migrated after 1871 to Australia, supposedly married in Australia.

Can any one help steer me in the right direction to try and locate this family. Any suggestions much appreciated.
Thanks Jane

In the 1871 Census Trewidal Farm St Dogmaels - the Ladd family have a Phoebe Davies in door Servant aged 15 yrs  born St Dogmaels - This could possibly be the future wife of William Ladd.

Also in the same census is Thomas Davies born abt 1847 St Dogmaels Son in Law married to Hannah Ladd.
Thomas Davies date of birth also fits in for a brother to Phoebe Davies

1870 March qtr District of Cardigan Thomas Davies = Hannah Ladd
Who went on to live at Gawse Llantood Pembrokeshire

Hi,

Llwyndafydd St Dogmaels was my ancestors home, before the Davies family took over. I have several photo's of the farm which I personally took on a trip to Wales. Would love to share them with you - I was just overjoyed when I actually saw the farm still standing.
