Scotland / Issue with Scotland's people
« on: Tuesday 26 June 18 15:42 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone else having an issue with Scotland's people today?

I log in Ok, type in my search and when I click search it logs me out, says log in to see reults, I log back in and when I try and narrow my search or change to page 2 it logs me back out again, very annoying.

Addition: and now it has my name at the top as if I'm logged in but the blue buttons (to .) say "log in to ."

The Lighter Side / Can someone explain this conversation re certificates
« on: Friday 27 April 18 16:27 BST (UK)  »
I have decided  I want to use my maiden name at work which led to what I find was a bizarre conversation with my professional body. since we're referring to law, I'm in Scotland btw.

First I was told it was illegal for a married woman to use her maiden name and I would have to be divorced and then use my divorce papers to be granted a deed poll to change my name or I'd be breaking the law. She then said I had to change my passport.  When I explained I didn't have a passport she claimed it was illegal not to have one for which I had to explain not if I didn't attempt to travel abroad.

After 10min of going round in circles with the above conversation she agreed I should send my birth certificate and get statements from colleagues to confirm they are happy for me to be know by my maiden name (eh?).  So I said "right so birth certificate, marriage certificate and statements?" She said "no just your birth cert" and when I asked "surely it's my marriage certificate that links the 2 names" and she said no.  worryingly she said they only accept England and wales birth certificates and I was born in Scotland so not sure if that means I don't exist  ???

Ayrshire / So just where did my ancestors live (Kilmarnock)
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 03:51 GMT (UK)  »
Had a fruitful day at the Burns Monument Centre yesterday and now trying to find where my 4x grt Gran was  born.

My 4x grt Gran was the oldest of 9 children (only found 8 so far).  I know this thanks to the minister specifying first second etc on baptisms.  On the baptism of my 4x grt grandmother and 6 of her siblings the address is given as either Low or Laigh Milton but the middle child it is Milton of Grougar.  My first thought was somewhere near Laigh Milton Viaduct but then discovered that there were still Grougar Cottages on Milton Rd more in the direction of Galston and Moscow.  So does anyone know do these addresses refer to the same place? Which (or neither) of these locations does it refer to?

Technical Help / Messages on Ancestry
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 07:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to reply to a message on Ancestry.  When I press send it comes up with the message "oops your message hasn't sent".  I've checked I'm still logged in but it still won't work.  Any ideas?

The Common Room / Help me 'kill off' my step 3x grt grandfather
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 12:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am struggling to find a death for my 3x grt grandmother's second husband.

This is what I have for him so far:

George Maycock (born England c1831) marries Jessie Campbell of McPherson in February 1860 at Arderseir Manse.  In November that year their daughter junior was born.  At the time of the 1861 census Jessie was living at the croft at Arderseir with the children and George (a soldier)  is at the barracks at Edinburgh Castle.  In 1864 he is out of the army and is sentence to 6 years for sheep stealing.  The case was head at court in Inverness.

I cannot find a death for him.  I have searched SP for deaths of a George M*cock from 1864 until 1930 but cannot find a death in Scotland.

Where now?

The Lighter Side / Should I delete my account?
« on: Sunday 08 October 17 09:08 BST (UK)  »
I have my tree on ancestry, mainly to have an "off site" backup for my tree.  I have not scanned in my sources, just put i a reference in the comments.  I guess it is just laziness re scanning but I have so much to work on and I was researching for about 11 years before I put anything on ancestry so scanning is not my priority.  .

I have now been involved in a discussion on a genealogy group on FB where someone was asking why someone wouldn't have the certificates.  A few of us commented saying they may do but haven't scanned them in and I explained how I worked with my certificates.  The OP has complained that people like me create a terrible mess on ancestry, make life difficult for everyone else, in fact spoil the site.  I really can't face the mountain of scanning that would be involved but now I feel really bad and anxious.  I don't want to spoil another person's hobby and definitely don't want to ruin a website.  Should I delete my trees and my account to tidy it up? what then is the best, and cheapest way to have an offsite backup?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Test for husband
« on: Wednesday 19 July 17 11:52 BST (UK)  »
My husband has very kindly bought me a DNA test for my birthday and he is going to do the test as I have already been tested.  I am now getting the jitters about having it done.  I have done a lot on my tree so have a fair number of people on it but my research into Hubby's tree is at a much earlier stage so have far fewer people in it atm.  I have read many comments on other forms saying really nasty things about people who have their DNA test attached to small trees.  Am I completely failing in DNA testing etiquette to do hubby's test.  I don't want to upset people.

The Common Room / Thomas Thompson, finding his family
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 11:27 BST (UK)  »
I've posted this in Common Room as it covers more than one county.  I have really confused myself with my husband's grandfather's family and could do with some help to clarify where to go next.

His grandfather was Thomas Arthur thompson born in Aston, Birmingham in 1904.  Birth certificate gives parents as Charles Thompson and Elizabeth Talbot.  I I have found what I think to be the family in 1911 census and they claim to have been married 11 years but no corresponding marriage that year.

The Thompson children in age order appear to be Gladys, Elizabeth, John, Thomas, James and Pattie.  They had a boarder Harold Davis with them in 1911.  Gladys, Elizabeth and John were all born in Manchester and the younger ones in Birmingham.

I was unable to find a birth for a Gladys Thompson in the right time frame.  Then I found charles in the 1901 as a boarder in Manchester with a Charles Davis, his wife Elizabeth and children Harold and Gladys.  So I started investigating if Charles Thompson had married Elizabeth Davis and taken on children from her first marriage.  I found births in the index for a Harold  Davis and Gladys Davis but mmn Johnson and found a corresponding marriage for a Charles Davis to an Elizabeth Johnson.

So I started considering he had takenon Elizabeth Johnson then gone with another Elizabeth.  However Elizabeth Thompson is mmn Johnson (no corresponding birth mmn Talbot), then Thomas mmn Talbot (no corresponding birth mmn Johnson).  Then this is where it gets very confusing for me James mmn Johnson (no corresponding birth Talbot) but then Pattie mmn Talbot(no corresponding mmn Johnson).

There is a marriage in Birmingham of a Charles Thompson to an Elizabeth Johnson in 1916 and a marriage of a Charles W Thompson to an Elizabeth Talbot in 1921 but that is in Sussex.

I'm really stumped, what can I do now to figure this out?
