Hi all

My nan said that her granny often went hop-picking in Kent. Do you think there are any lists of people employed in hop picking available for research?

All thoughts appreciated greatly!

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Gilder - marriage
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I would be very grateful if someone could help me to find the marriage of John Gilder b.1788, Thaxted, Essex. I have no knowledge of his wife's name but she has passed on by the 1861 census. The couple had a son, Peter in 1823 but I don't know about other children. John owned/was main tenant on a farm near Thaxted and he passes this to Peter so I think Peter may be the oldest child. This may also suggest that John's father had a farm too?

Any help very gratefully recieved!

Thanks very much

Occupation Interests / Gas fitters
« on: Monday 18 July 05 10:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.

I've been tracing the Wood side of my family and they have occupations as gas workers and fitters. The family seems to always be on the move. Do you think this is due to the nature of their occupations or something else?

Thanks very much

Family History Beginners Board / Wood from the trees!
« on: Wednesday 13 July 05 12:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for furthering my investigations into the Wood family.

I have Francis Henry Wood who married Charlotte Isabel Allen, Marriage Registered: Mar 1898, Chelsea. I don't know where or when either was born.

Charlotte's maiden name was Clarke. She was married first to Benjamin Oliver Allen, Marriage registered: Mar 1891, Hackney. I have a probable death for him registered  Dec 1892, Bethnel Green, age 23. Charlotte and Benjamin had a daughter, Margaret. I don't knw again, where or when she was born but I assume c1892.

Margaret used the surname Wood in later life so I assume this name was adopted after Charlotte's marriage to Henry.

Charlotte and Henry had seven children together. They must have moved around the country a fair bit though:

Children:

William Harold

Francis Ernest

Percy Thomas Tembitt/Timbett b. 04/12/1901, Shirebrook, Derby and Notts

Winifred Isabel, Birth registered: Jun 1904, Wokingham (these Wokingham ones are def right as I have it from family sources that they lived there for a time)

Olive Caroline , Birth registered: Dec 1905, Wokingham

Reginald Alexander, Birth registered: Mar 1908, Wokingham

Jessica Dorothy

The family ended up in Luton though. Charlotte died around 1950-1955 ish in Luton.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can't find the family in 1901. Doesn't mean that they aren't there....it's just that wood is such a common name!!

Many thanks

Caz
