Australia / James Norman, Chippendale, 1846
« on: Wednesday 21 June 17 04:43 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the correct arrival record for a James Norman who had three children baptised at St Lawrence's church in Sydney in 1846.

I found two of the baptisms on the Joint Copying Project microfilm and the details are as follows:

Mary Norman born October 1846 baptised 31 March 1846 daughter of James & Bridget Norman, Chippendale, father a sawyer.

Frederick Norman born 1841 baptised 5 July 1846 son of James & Bridget Norman, Chippendale, father a sawyer.

James & Bridget do not seem to have been married - an 1846 article from Trove says that Bridget took action against James for failing to support one of their illegitimate children and already had another two with him: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/12886253?searchTerm=%22james%20norman%22&searchLimits=exactPhrase|||l-advstate=New+South+Wales|||dateTo=1846-12-31|||notWords|||anyWords|||dateFrom=1820-01-01|||requestHandler|||sortby=dateAsc

I was wondering if anyone can work out how James Norman arrived in Australia. Unfortunately I'm not sure when he died in order to order the right death certificate. Bridget arrived free (according to later gaol records) on the Duchess of Northumberland in 1836 and died in 1853 (I think).

Australia / Thomas James Proctor/Procter mentioned for bravery 1917
« on: Saturday 17 June 17 11:58 BST (UK)  »
I am helping a friend do some family history research and her great grandfather's brother was mentioned for bravery during World War One.

His name was Thomas James Proctor/Procter and he died of wounds on 11 June 1917, buried at Boulogne. His military file states in an entry dated 18 June 1917 that he was mentioned for bravery.

I assume this means that he was mentioned in despatches. I looked at the AWM website re mentioned in despatches and it says there was usually a notice placed in the London Gazette. However, I can't find any notice for Thomas. Can anyone help? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Other Countries / Germany/Denmark: where is "Harmoesdance, Germany"?
« on: Wednesday 14 June 17 00:09 BST (UK)  »
I am looking at a death certificate of a Peter Niclaus Paulsen who died aged 68 in 1902 in Muinganden, Queensland, Australia. His parents are recorded as Hans Paulsen & Elsiebea Dorothea Von Doken.

Peter and his wife arrived in Queensland in 1865 with his "former town" noted as "Barlt, Holstein" on an immigration record, which place I can find and which I understand is now in Germany but was ruled by the King of Denmark prior to the 1860s.

Peter's wife's death certificate says that she and Peter married in "Baldt, Holstein". However, Peter's death certificate says he was born in "Harmoesdance, Germany".

My question is, where is "Harmoesdance"?

I also have a question about the "Von Doken" maiden surname of Peter's mother - is this a German name or can it be Danish too? Am I right to say that it signifies aristocracy (with the "von")? (I understand that it does in Germany.)

I was wondering whether any very kind souls would be willing to look at the attached two extracts from an administration document dated 1574 and tell me any names, dates or family relationships?

I think (from the covering page) it relates to a John Gell of Carsington in Derbsyhire. I think I am descended (according to the paper trail) from a John Gell who died, according to a couple of research sources, in 1564.

Derbyshire / Will of Anthony Gell of Hopton dated 1579
« on: Tuesday 13 June 17 08:31 BST (UK)  »
A number of online sources mention a will of Anthony Gell of Hopton in Derbyshire dated 1579. I have tried searching for that will in the findmypast "Staffordshire, Dioceses Of Lichfield And Coventry Wills And Probate 1521-1860" series and also the Ancestry series containing PCC wills. Neither seems to have it. Does anyone know where else I might find it?

I was wondering if anyone could help date this photo of a lady taken at the Relma Studios at 216 King Street, Newtown, presumably Sydney (as my family are from NSW).

The photo comes via my late grandmother and I suspect it might be of either:

1. her grandmother Alice Evans, born in 1874 in Glebe, died 1961 Kingsford. She lived in Sydney her whole life but not, so far as I'm aware, in Newtown.

2. her other grandmother, Sarah Ann Vigers nee Budden, born 1865 in Denman, died in 1953 in Mosman. She grew up in the Hunter Valley then lived in Dubbo in the 1890s before moving to Burwood in Sydney sometime probably not too long before 1917.

Many thanks if anyone can help.

Northumberland / Thomas Surtees of Whittonstall
« on: Monday 08 May 17 05:57 BST (UK)  »
My partner descends from a Thomas Surtees who was baptised at Whittonstall, Northumberland, on 12 November 1786 as the son of another Thomas Surtees.

I believe this Thomas Surtees baptised 1786 is mentioned in the book "Records of the family of Surtees" that is available here: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/260486?availability=Family%20History%20Library

He is mentioned at page 142 (with a birth year of 1783) and using the information contained in that book can be traced back to the marriage of his grandfather Thomas Surtees and Mary Angus in 1704 at Bywell St Peter.

I am wondering how accurate the book is generally regarded as being and whether there is any corroborative evidence tracing Thomas Surtees baptised 1786 back to the 1704 marriage. I can find the mentioned marriages etc on IGI but without further evidence I'm not 100% sure of the link.

Sutherland / "Achastel"(?) - place in Tongue parish
« on: Friday 17 February 17 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
I believe my partner is descended from Donald McPherson and his wife Margaret/Peggy Campbell who were recorded baptising two children, John & George, in Tongue parish in 1795. That entry contains what seems to be a place name (?Achastel) - see attached image.

I was wondering if anyone knows where this place might be. I am trying to narrow down where Donald and Peggy might be buried to a particular one of the three graveyards in Tongue parish that have been photographed on the wonderful site by Christine Stokes: http://cosuthtongue.blogspot.com.au/

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
