I am looking for any information on Frederick William Gates, in particular his parents.  He married Jane Armour Craig in 1898 at Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire.

They had three sons - Fred (died young), John Seaton and William Stanley who was born on 29/7/1911.  William later became a professional golfer and came out to Africa.

Any information on the Gates/Craig families would really be appreciated. 

 

I have just been given three portraits of some ancestors, but no-one is actually sure of who they really are!  I don't even know who the artist was as a now late family member cut the canvas smaller as the paintings were too large to fit into a cardboard roll to be posted 

On the back of each oil painting is the stamp of Roberson & Miller, 51 Long Acre, London - a partnership that was in existence between 1828 - 1839.  Each portrait also has a number stamped on the back - a different number in each case.

I believe that Roberson & Miller were suppliers of art materials, and possibly framers as well.  Is there any way of identifying what the number stamped on the back relates to?

Does anyone know where the original policy documents of Sun Fire Insurance can be found? 

I have been told that the details on the London Metropolitan Archives site comes from indexes and ordering these will not give the actual policy.

William Graham was enrolled as a burgess of Burntisland on 16 October 1738 according to the family Bible.

Does anyone have an idea of what paperwork would have been issued in this regard?  I am trying to get more information on him and wonder whether it would be worth following up on this.

I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what the writing on the one pendant is, and what the shape on the other represents.  I think that they are both Jewish, but could not find all the symbols in the Jewish alphabet.
